Of course you know that since I found the gold chain I had to get out more with it. Here's the puzzle. On the lower discriminate level, nickels will give a repeatable signal, but it literally just breaks up the whole signal width. It's the wierdest sound-yet the foil and canslaw are smooth! The plus side is the dang thing easily hits dimes at 6" and screwcaps at 8-10" Of course I have the upper level set to where it click rejects pulltabs. At tot lots I set it to just reject paper clips and turn the upper level completely off and have found the darndest things with it-large nails will still set it off. In other words, it really is a remarkable old machine and had I not thought the tab and foil were my enemies when I was younger I would be better off now. Is this a normal sound for this machine? Anyone still have one? My hope is that the smooth foil sound will be the same with a gold ring in the foil range.

I hear what you're saying, David. At first I thought maybe I had a coil problem until I hit some canslaw and small foil and got the normal? smooth sound. What's interesting to me is if I get a gold ring in the foil area-what will it sound like. Since the nickel does this EVEN in the air test, I will try to find a gold ring-maybe one of my wife's-and see what it sounds like. I had hoped someone still had one to see if this was standard for the model. It really gets interesting in tot lots where I just barely ignore the paper clips and turn the tab reject all the way off as far as it will go. It still won't find a fine gold chain, but the gold earrings and bracelets will sound. It's just sad to think all these years I had the pulltab and foil reject on. A DEEP nickel will be smooth like a small foil-so I have to be careful. I found that by rechecking it in pinpoint if the signal gets louder by maintaining the same height, it's more likely to be a good target-although a large piece of foil will fool me. If it's trash, the signal usually is faint. Guess I'll have to get a set of rechargeables since it takes 3 nine volts and looks like I'm gonna be using it for a while.

Anything that helps you differentiate trash from good targets is a boon. Since few things are perfect, simply going in this direction is a bonus. I used to have a Fisher 1266x, with which I could tell foil instantly by it's sound.

Gold chains are NO criteria to judge a detector by. It is just too much to ask for a VLF detector to reliably hit chains. Some will on occasion do it, if conditions are right. But for the most part, you are better off looking for whatever was ON the chain.

It's just sad to think all these years I had the pulltab and foil reject on.

Same old rule, mate: If it indicates 3" or deeper, recover it.

A good plan. Dollar store 9V are also a good buy at a dollar. Im guessing the F-III is not too fussy about them.
