Blazing Merc and old ring

DirtFlipper

New member
This is one of the nicer Mercs I've found, and it's fresh out of the ground today. I saw the sharp reeded edge first, so thought it might be a newer silver Roosie.

At first I thought the ring was one of those toy adjustable ones because the band was split, but it felt heavy. I finally saw the 'sterling' on the band after rinsing it off. It also has a hallmark that I haven't researched yet - it's a 'U' with an arrow through it. Also seems to be missing something on the front surface. Oh well.

After some quick research, the mark appears to be for "Uncas".

HH,

Merc still has some mint lustre. Nice job.

Dirtflipper, That merc must have been lost the year it was minted. Too bad we can't find all of them in that nice of shape. Rings are always nice to find. Keep up the good work! HH and GL. Ken

The reason the band is split and the stone missing is from the ground freezing. Ice expands, even water pipes will split open if not buried deep enough. Doesn't happen on rings that have a narrow band, just wide bands. I found a few rings with wide bands that were cracked at the bottom. Larger stones, like onyx, sometimes pop out from ice.
