I met up with Allen after work and we fired up his boat and headed for the sandbar on the lake. The water was to high to hunt the sandbar, so we ended up hitting a small beach at a campground. The place is loaded with nails :rage: We were soaked before we ever got out of the boat. That rain kinda smarts when you are flying across the lake. :surrender: We didn't even find a coin :cry: We pretty much had the lake to ourselves.....no one else was stupid enough to be out there in the rain! :lol: Oh well.......we tried and we had fun anyway.
 
You won't find anything if you don't get out in the field I guess. At least your gettin' out there. An oldtimer told me once, get out to any site & dig 30 targets & at least 1 is gonna be good. Heck, I know I'm not gonna find squat on a ladder painting my parents house.... :unsure:
 
to that theory I guess (and not "descrimanatin' tha discrimanasion" either). So, I take it you were not using an Excel or C$, because I never dig nails with those machines.....
Maybe a fishin' pole wouldda been better? ;)
 
went to sandbar, sun was shining, water was 79deg. Found 14 clad quarters in 1 hour plus other coins. It's those 1280's, bad luck, sun always shines when using a CZ20:rofl:

Actually was letting a friend try an S-Ray II scuba diving off the sandbar, I was just killing time w/ the CZ20 and watching the Loons.

Been tempted to take the Excel wading, but one slip:nopity:

The last time we went we came away with 5 rings and a couple of chains from one little swimming area. I think there may be some stuff there, but the digging is tough and it was starting to get dark. It was a perfect time to hunt the sandbar. There wasn't another boat in sight. But they got about 3 inches of rain in the mountains, so the sandbar was about 7 feet deep instead of 3 or 4 feet deep. Man I love that 1280, but I sure wish it had tone ID! Don't worry though.....We are actively pursuing "Plan B" ;)
 
the number of days in November, chest deep, 1/4" wetsuit, 50deg water, float coat w/ hood, baseball cap soaked thru, water dripping down nose from rain & sleet mix, digging tabs. This either shows commitment or that I should be committed, haven't quite decided. :stars:

And at that point doesn't matter what machine you are using. So if you're willing to race around a lake in the rain, then you're showing commitment to the hobby, or others might say, "Ya got the fever brother, gold fever"!;)

It's still got potential. It's just going to take a LOT more time than we had the other night to clean it out. I just wish the 1280 had tone ID. That would sure speed things up!
 
the area I am hitting with the CZ20 now has large areas where a 100 years of old docks were. There are areas that are about 300sq ft of constant low tone, like your standing on a steel bridge. Tone ain't gonna help, so I am left with a dilema, I am looking for deep old silver coins, according to this previous post the best machine for that I have is the CZ20 http://www.findmall.com/read.php?35,191678,191678#msg-191678.

The best iron machine I have is the Excel, with good silver depth, next best iron machine is S-Ray II, sooo.... And they drop the lake level in two weeks, that's all the time I have left to access it with my boat. What I need is a waterproof Excel!! I find the readout on the Excel actually helps much more than the tones on the Excel, I wish they would have stayed with 3 tones instead of split tones, because when you get over a chattery target that jumps segments, well, was that hi-lo, lo-hi, hi-lo or lo-hi, hi-lo, lo-hi, blast it! What was that? I find it more distracting than helpful. So now I mainly say OK, beeped, look at display.

Yesterday I devised an LED layout for a waterproof Excel to display the LCD numbers. I won't post it here because I wish to maintain my copyright on the design.

It wouldn't bother me even if it had them flutey tootey sounds of the down under machines. :biggrin:

I get a big kick out of guys that base iron performance on above ground tests with nails and coins. Might have meant something in the "old days" but not with this newer stuff. he hee

that hi-lo, lo-hi, hi/lo thing literally and in that sequence or not, but if you did, and it's consistant, you're about to get lucky (in the metal detecting sense! ;) ) It means there's probably a good target next to iron. Move to the side of "the target" (which is more than likely two targets) that was reading hight tone and move the coil front to back. If the target isn't real deep, lift the coil some when you're sweeping north/south. If it stays high both ways, you're in and you need to dig! Even if you only get a consistent high tone from one of the N/S sweeps, DIG! It's late and I'm tired, so if I misread or misunderstood your post, just disregard. :D
 
Brad, I am refering to the split low-mid, mid-high tones of the Excel in the middle conductivity range. I prefer the CZ format, also have a BH w/ a similar pattern.

i.e. The typical high tone followed by a low tone echo on nails w/ the CZ makes it easier to audio classify iron. To be truthful it is one of the few things I would like to see changed on the Excel.
