Brand New Surf Master PI+

note: (This post went to the Alaska forum by mistake. Something was wrong because after that everttime I hit your link it went there. Had to shut the laptop off and retry.)
Bought a new Whites Surf Master Plus PI and it was delivered yesterday. This thing only weighs about 2 lbs. Only has two knobs on it. One for threshhold and the other for on and off/disc. Everything else is built in, I guess.
This thing will only air test a nickle at 10 inches but the threshhold is as smooth as silk. $493 total w/headphones, 1 yr warranty and water proof. There is a Mod available and different coils, I hope.. Whites discontinued it and this was the last one so they say. Bought it thru Kelly co.
Hey Guys, figure this one out. I need help!
Don't know if it was a fluke or not. Went out yesterday with it to one of my thrashed patches and I mean Thrashed with everything imaginable but mainly a 24 inch mono on a Sd 21 and my GP t. Took a lot of Big ones off this in the last 6 years and some smaller ones lately. Found 43 oz's a few years ago (3 specys in a 10 ' circle) 75% gold and over 3" deep with my 21.
This one was down about 2 1/2 ft in the hard red stuff. It's gotta have at least 5 or six ounces AU in it and it is heavy. Don't know how I could have missed it over the years. Maybe something else was covering the signal or something. The signal was a whisper, though. Frostbit my fingers but didn't even feel it.
My questions are: Does this Mod from Bill help it a lot and how much? That was some hot ground and the TH was pretty steady. Kelly co thought they had one more in stock but they didn't. Had to get one from Fishers shipped in. Maybe this was an advanced one or something. I am going to do more testing on it. Had more snow here at Gold Basin and that will slow me down. It was weak on Meteorites, too.
I thought this was made by Eric, is it? What other coil would be suitable for it, depth etc? Let me know what you guys think I really appreciate it.....joebody PS I will post it on my site when I get my computer and camera fixed. Hey if you are squeamish or too liberal, you better stay from my website.HAHA http://www.angelfire.com/nv/goldking

Hi Joe,
As far as I am aware, the Surfmaster Plus incorporates the mod that Bill does which effectively reduces the delay from around 20uS to 15uS. The smooth threshold on the Surfmaster is because a diode is incorporated in the dc signal line at the end of the receiver, just before the audio circuit. This suppresses the small interference signals that would give the audio a bit of a warble. You also suppress those small real signals which repeat as you scan over them and your brain naturally separates from the random background noise. Bit like the muffler in a car. Most customers want the car to run dead quiet but this saps horsepower. A custom muffler may be noisier, but it enables the car to have a bit more performance.
Your experience shows that standard PI's without ground balancing, will work as effective nugget hunters in less mineralised areas.
Eric.

the mod. Bill does.I think only the pi PRO does. So, this person can still benefit by Mr. Bill's mod.

Hi Chuck,
I think you are right. I was confusing the Plus with the Pro. Is the Plus the one with the plastic shield over the circuit board?
Eric.

the only difference is in the seal- if I remember correctly, the O-ring is a little thicker.I dont know about the shield, but you may be right.By the way, I really enjoy your comments and help on this forum. I have a Beachscan Mk 2 on the way I bought used.I look forward to using a detector of your design!
