Broke a Garrett AT PRo users heart.........

New member
took the Fisher F 70 to do a bit of hunting around the Seattle area. My buddy Arnie, asked if he could come along....he has been using the Garrett AT Pro, he is an experienced Th'er with about 25 years of experience and has the AT PRO figured out quite well. Things got ugly when we decided to do side by side comparisons on signal responses. The F 70 was better at rejecting rusty bottle caps......had a less fluttery audio, hit hard and loud. It clearly picked out targets with much greater speed . The target id numbers were more stable as well. We went to three different parks, as well as by the waterfront on a damp saltwater beach. Here the At Pro had a slightly better audio but... not as good a depth!!I I like the idea of a waterproof unit but not at the expense of performance. In the last hour he asked to use the machine so we traded...Geez had to pry it out of his hands. He has contacted a dealer and had worked out a trade arrangement towards a new F70.The point of the trip was not to one-up him, or try to make him unhappy with his machine , but that's how things turned out. I suggested the F75 but he likes the F70's ease of use.Arnie said the At Pro is good but in total, when everything is taken into account Arnie felt that the F 70 was superior. Good news for Fisher I guess.

In the lower end, I decided on an F2 over the 250 as my backup unit because of the great target separation and the Tesoro-like super fast recovery speed.
I am also hitting dimes at 7-8 inches once in awhile in my severe mineralized red clay Alabama soil, and that surprised the heck out of me.
I guess these differences and more are inherent as you go up the line.
Absolutely love the Propointer, though.

Try an underwater test too for a completely unbiased comparison of the two. Would be interested to hear the results.
Sure, your test has a deal of validity but the AT PRO has its selling points as well which you will truly recognize after that additional test.

The way the thing apparently has sold and so many seemingly still loving it, it must have something going for it, as it sure has had plenty of ills. HH jim tn

I'll get some heat for this. The ATPro is a copy-cat of FTP. Yeah, it has reverse engineering points. Still a wanbee. Garrett does not have a Dave Johnson on board. The post may be distasteful........the AT Pro is a wanabee copy-cat. No matter how it's pumped up.

I've had the F75/F75 LTD/F70 and now the AT Pro. I done several videos featuring the F75 that became really popular back in the day; Fisher even had one of them on their website. Here is the thing about FT I don't like...you can't trust most of what you read on the forums about their products. Because they openly offer freebies and discounts to users that talk up the products good enough. I know because I was given several hats and t-shirts, promised discounts on future products, etc and the better the finds or stories, the better the rewards. My videos and such were honest...and it's good to reward honest folks. The problem is...not everybody is honest and some folks are really taking advantage of such "easter eggs" they are offering...especially when they are tempted with "the better the finds/stories the better the freebies" and FT don't seem to really care because they are getting good publicity on the forums and selling products because of it. It's easy to snuff these fellas out...they are the ones that every time a new machine is released they will have one and be one of the firsts to try it out. They will then start posting almost too good to be true "finds" made in their "hunted out" spots. That's all people need to see and they will go lay down their hard earned money for a machine that may or MAY NOT be what folks on the forum are hyping it up to be. I know several that do it; I'm sure there are more that do it now that I don't know about since I'm not in the loop anymore for blowing the whistle on this. I know I refused to hype a machine that wouldn't or couldn't do what I claimed it could do.

So that said...here is my take on the original post in the thread. Based on what I saw with the F70 with stock coil and the 11" DD that comes on the F75...the F70 ain't really "all that" of a machine. It certainly wasn't close to an F75 in depth or performance...and from using the AT Pro for a few weeks now I can tell you that it's not even close to the AT Pro in performance either for anybody that really knows how to set it up. Dude that was using it in the original post must have had it in Standard mode or something. If you put that bad boy in Pro mode it comes to life. The F70 down at my red dirt bullet site wouldn't hit a minie ball beyond 6-8 inches in the ground with the 11" F75 coil and with it in all metal!! I know the AT Pro will at least hit one to 10 inches with a decent signal in the red dirt with its stock coil. If anybody disputes that, you have an open invite to come up here and I will put you on the red dirt bullet site. We'll mark some signals. Compare them on video detector to detector. And we'll just show the world what they can and can't do. Forum talk is cheap. Pictures are worth a thousand words. But videos show and tell all. Any F70 guys up for that?

I can pull up to a schoolyard, stick the coil of the F70 out of the truck window, swing it around in the air a little, and it will tell me the amount of money in that location! If I crank up the sens, it will tell me the dates! If I lower the thresh a little, and press "menu" it will automatically deposit that amount in my checking account! Now, wheres my free hat!

If you are personally pleased with your make and model whatever it may be.
There's no need to put others down.
We are all different and so are the machines.
We quietly go about our hobby and are very pleased with our detectors. Fisher F70s.

As a field tester I feel the need to respond to this post, Daniel.

All FTP ever gives me is work. Test this, test that, test that again. send it back, ok test it again. This doesn't work, this does work. Then write reports you guys never see. It is fun work but it is work non-the-less and takes time away from what you would rather be doing, which is detecting for what you like to detect for, fun, without having to report on every little detail. FTP does pay you for your time and effort with equipment once it's proved out and goes to production. Then since you have knowledge about the equipment that other do not, you feel obligated to post about it to share what you know, even if you don't necessarily like the machine. When its all over I guarantee you feel like you earned every penny of it.

The only detector I shamelessly promote is the one I bought myself and fell in love with, which is the Fisher F5 for inland jewelry hunting. I haven't gotten any free hats or T-shirts for it, or promises of discounts. Fisher asked if they could use what I posted on the forum for advertisement for the F5 and I said, YES! I didn't get paid for that or any freebies because of it.

I own both the ATPro and the F75. I am a firm believer that a detector has its selling points. Lets start with the ATPro. A midrange in price detector. Waterproof to 10 feet, Unreal in iron and trash All purpose All Terrain detector with Proportional audio. For what you are paying for the detector and the features you are getting..It is a beast. Now F75..High end detector. Marketed as the best relic detector and I agree..I have also found gold and deep Silver coins. It is awesome in every aspect. First Texas and Garrett have great customer service. I've dealt with both. IMHO it really depends on what type of detecting you want to do. One thing the ATPro can do that all others can't. If it starts thunderstorming I don't have to pack up and go to the Jeep. I can keep hunting. The F70 is from all reports I have heard a really great detector. It may not be an F75, but it probably will hold its own. I own 2 detectors Fisher and Garretts and i will stay with them until someone or another company shows me different.

You should know better around a few of those statements pertaining to "post for perks". All you personally bring and have ever brought to this hobby are observations and opinons........the very same thing each and everyone else does. I know you have The Lord in your heart,as do I, but that doesn't make our words pertaining to detectors any more valid or important than anyone elses. You and I both know there are and will always be individuals that just because of how they roll and feel, will talk up certain detectors. They're entitled to do so. Not to slight others, but I only trust my experienced based (and also always honest) opinions and they are always subject to change because I work to challenge them every trip out. I would never expect or recommend anyone else take my opinions as gospel and more importantly, nor should they. I'll refrain from commenting about my experiences with this particular detector that IMO shouldn't be discussed here in the first place. Read fast.... this all won't be up long.

I agree with you 100%. Mike Scott, and I had much communication when F75 first came out.
He taught me the things I needed to know. I posted those results on the forum. I was never asked if I wanted anything free.
I did have a defective machine... It was replaced at FT cost. This was done under the warranty........ including the shipping to me and pick up of faulty detector.

FT, Mike, and David J do care........They no more want false information given out than "you, I, or anyone else would want"

Bogus info does not sell detectors. Only factual information will do that.

We all have to remember, "not all detectors will function in all places", as well as some results are garnered, and published on this forum.

Location, and operator ability will play a big role.

love the "light saber" action!
you forgot the sequence where the 70 digs everything!
gotta throw that in somewhere!..just sayin!

I have seen some of the $200 machines in the right hands really produce some good finds. Great point Elton.

that doesn't apply to anyone but you. My results with the F70 & the AT Garrett were quite different. Unless we are hunting together at the same time, same place, how we do, is strictly related to the ground were hunting in at that time. Other words, How I do in my detecting pertains to me, at that time, at that place. It just can't be duplicated by anyone else, certainly in a different geological location.

With this said, I don't disagree that in your heavy mineralized ground the AT Pro finds lead alloy bullets better than the Fisher F70. My question to you, did you make the same comparison between the two on coins instead of lead alloy ? I believe you would noticed the F70 does at least as good as the AT, and perhaps a bit better. It certainly does better for me here in the Northeast than the AT.

Arnie just reported to me that he has found 3 gold rings so far, in hunting the tight compact parts of damp saltwater beach shorelines. He has never had any luck using detectors in this area.....the F70 is different!!! The f70 works so well for him under these conditions ... that he has decided, that's all he will be doing for the remainder of this summer he will keep me posted. His goal is a lofty............. 15 rings by the end of summer!!!

I have the AT Pro :garrett:, F75 LTD :fisher: and I recently added an E-trac :minelab: to the arsenal.

All three are TERRIFIC machines  That said, IMHO, all are far from perfect, yet each one has delivered great finds!

Each one also offers something uniquely different then the others :detecting:

Brian
