Hit a local park complex tonight for just an hour or so. This park has been hit so hard that it was considered 'worked out' by the late 70's. Anyway, I have a good memory of the way things were back in the 50's so concentrated my searching in a small area that I thought might give me a chance at silver. Though I only had an hour to detect, I found a 1925 cent at 8+ inches and a '44 merc dime at around the same depth about 25 feet away.
I used the settings Bryce has had such good luck with just to test out how those plus my new SEF 10X12 would work. Both signals were unmistakable. There is some iron trash there, as well as deep foil. Its been worked so hard though, that even pull tabs are rare to find! I even learned a bit about how deep nails react on the cursor screen (after digging one or two, of course), and I believe I can now appreciate the difference in signals. I really would never have gone to a gain setting of 10, if left to my own experimenting, so that right there is the value of this forum, and all the different techniques that get posted.
The coil ran rock stable, even when I switched over to manual "just to see" how the machine would react. I got an interesting effect at sens 26 in manual on some deep iron. With the gain set so high, the actual signal was preceded by a kind of drum beat twang. No mistaking that! Higher conductive targets, even shallow ones, didn't react that way. I'll have to see if I run into that effect again.
Anyway, thanks Bryce, for the good advice! That setup is a good tool up here in MN too!
