I was able to get out for the first time yesterday and found these at an early 1800's home site. Does anyone know what they are? They look like buttons to me, but have no shank. Each one has a number "3" at the top, and they look to be made of white metal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

They are hem weights. They were sewn into the bottoms of coats to keep them from curling up when they get wet. They re fairly common finds in colonial era sites. Nice finds..........Aaron

That's what I've been told over many years Aaron, but upon examining many CW era coats (Military) I haven't seen any so far. Have seen them attached to curtains however. In large, antebellum homes, windows in certain rooms were quite large, and the curtains looked like those in Gone with the Wind. Had these weights sewn within the bottom hem. Most coats were issued with a raw hem, only to be cut to length for the owner. We need more info on this particular item. Maybe Dave Poche can shed some facts? Good hunting, David @ Dixie
