Found this, this afternoon and it looks like a brass button, but don't really see hooks on the back. Any ideas? It is about 1.05 inch in diameter. Thickness is .085. It came out of the ground with a green tarnish over it, that is what makes me think brass.

Thanks!

Jason

I measured my large cent and its 1 1/8". If I am doing the math right 1.05 is 1 1/20". I don't know what a half cent measures, maybe that's a possibility. Or it could be an old copper token. Whatever it is, it must be well over 100 years old. I wish there were a bit of detail left. I would've been stoked when pulling that from the ground since it looks like a LC. I hate not knowing what something is after cleaning it up.

Aarong81, Yeah I hate not knowing as well!!! I am on the Chesapeake Bay so the mineral content here can beat things up a little, but agree it should be 100+ years. I was pretty stoked even if it was a button. There was an old farmstead near where I found this that burned down in the early 1900s but dated back to 1700s. I would really like to find something that ties back to that time, but a lot of development may have killed the chances.

I think 1.05" is about 26.6mm and a lot of store tokens and scrip are that size and everywhere around that size. Its unlikely you will get enough detail to figure out what it is but its probably one of those two options.

Here are the copper coins minted in the US that are closest to 26mm....

Half Cent
23.5 mm
6.74 g
1795-1857

Large Cent
29 mm
10.89 g
1793-1857
