buying a new detector

Like I said in an earlier post I have never owned anything but Garrett detectors.I am looking to upgrade from my Ace 250.I am looking at the Fisher F5,and the F70,but don't know which one I should buy, like I said don't know much about Fisher but believe they make excellent machines.Basically what is the difference between the F5 and the F70 and is one more user friendly than the other?

I can't comment on the F70, but the F5 is a great unit for it's price and it's great at finding nickels and gold and silver. I like the controls on it too.

The threshold and gain controls being separate is what made me look at the unit in more detail, also it has 3 freq modes as well as 4 tone modes.

I've found it to be very easy to learn to for a mid priced detector, it's been great on land, and with the 5" DD coil is kicks in trashy areas.

Look on this forum for Mike Hillis, he is the guru on the F5, read all the posts made by him going back at least a year here to get an idea of the F5. I learnt a lot from his posts and info.

Its my first detector, so take this for what it is...Great battery life, very light and quick, have had no troubles with the 11DD even in the tot lots right up tight to the poles...I guess its a matter of really getting comfortable with whichever you decide, trusting in it and learning its language...I ran in AT most of the summer before even trying other programs...rarely ground balance, and swing like a fool im sure, but managed to pay for it right quickly with clad and gold...found 2 class rings (both returned) cashed 800 bucks in other gold by August...had it out today on the sledding hills and carry it with me wherever I go. Wish it was waterproof to 10 feet, and maybe a backlight, thats about it...
Good luck, and HH

I am new today on this forum,I am using a Garrett Ace 250 and am wanting to upgrade my detector.I do not know very much about Fisher, except what I read, have not found many people who use them.My question is: Is the F5 a good machine and is it a upgrade from the ace 250,if not what fisher is?thanks.

I had a though and below is a link that you can go there and select your 250 and do a line by line comparison to just about any detector. I am not suggesting you buy from them but once you figure out what detector you want I would suggest you contact one or more of the forum sponsors and give them a chance to work you up a good deal. These guys will work with you one on one.

I owned an ace 250 couple years back and tried a couple other tone detectors since, finally ended up with the F5. I think you'll be impressed there are more adjustments possible to fine tune you hunting style, much faster retune(I just X the target to pinpoint) more accurate target ID, easy ground balancing, and a very user friendly interface, notch disc that works similar to the ace's will help shorten the learning period. Runs smoother at the beach also.
