Cabin fever setting in so I headed over to Lake Michigan with the Omega for a beach hunt

As I expected the winds had blown the snow away from small areas of the beach exposing the sand and due to the warmup (high 30's) of the last couple days combined with the relatively warm lake waters the sand was diggable.

For those not familiar with the Great Lakes, the water levels had dropped well below normal over the last few years but are making a strong come back. Current levels are at or very near long term normals on the lakes. This is a normal fluctuation that occurs and I am old enough to remember three of these major rises and falls. So it ain't due to Global Warming I don't care what the alarmists say.

Finds were more plentiful than I thought they would be. I worked the sand and where open, the slope caused by the rising levels. Yup we are "losing" beach due to the rising lake levels. The slope and associated small cut gave up most of the targets and the digging was tough in the stone and gravel layer exposed by the rising water. No gold today but I got a handful of older coins and 2 small rings. A well corroded copper ring wgt .7 grams and one silver ring wgt 1.0 grams. Yup the Omega hits the small stuff real well.

A couple of interesting things to note. One area of the beach has streaks of black sand and although the Omega's fe meter immediately jumped to 2 bars over the streaks the ground error showed no change and this with the concentric coil. Several items came out of this area including one zinc at 7 - 8" and the sidewall of the hole showed several layered streaks of the black sand. Pretty cool.
