Cache Hidden ...Coins In Mayonnaise Jar...Note

boxofchocolates

New member
Ok guys here is the story as best I can remember it....I'm 57 now at about the age of twelve I buried a mayo jar with some coins mostly Penny's some nickels and dimes back of my mom and dads house in a ditch of sand 12-16 inches down.I liked collecting coins, rocks etc.at this time there were no metal detectors that I new of only military mine sweep types. With this in mind now as looking back I loved the idea of finding treasure and wanted someone in the future to find it......The note went like this.....here is some money it won't do me any good but maybe someone will find it years from now and it will help them....To this day on a few occasions I will drop a penny.nickel or dime in the garbage bag when I take it out just thinking about someone in the future finding it and wondering who lost it ,where did it come from....you know what I'm saying. and the possibility of it being worth something to them $ wise...I don't think I every went back to the jar as it was on direct path to a little country store we went to after school I don't remember getting any of the change out for cokes or candy.....one side of the ditch running at a ...T...was widen out by the city with machines...I don't remember looking for it but thought about it at times....It could have been destroyed....I've decided to leave it any way because of the original purpose...Have any of you done anything like this or thought about it?.....Good Luck Hunting To All.....Remember the best treasure we will ever find is with God In Heaven.....God Bless......Dan
PS.... one day I will do a good one with a note....I'm thinking about this and what to write...I could write a lot... God has been good to me That is real treasure to share.

LOL Mike......someone will find them.

and look for your jar lol. A few years ago we put hardwood floors down in the house I now live in. We did it ourselves and in every room I put a VA state quarter down on the sub floor before putting the hardwood down. Our house was new when we bought it. My husband asked me why was I doing that and I said years and years from now when someone tears this house down, they will be delighted to find these "old" coins. He just looked at me like I was crazy but I really thought someone in the far future would appreciate what I had done. Just the treasure hunter in me and he doesn't share that.

I guess we are all kindred spirits....LOL....God Bless......Dan

I got a plastic treasure chest outy of captain crunch cereal when i was small . I filled it with coins then put it in a jar and buried it . I drew a map , but have know idea where it is now. I can not remember what all coins i put in there though.

Good one you may find it.....could it have been 7 cents lol......God Bless.......Dan

Tales has it that years ago people would put a silver dollar on one of the foundation stones before they laid the floor joists. They thought it would bring them good luck with their house. So when you're around an old house being torn down you might want to check the foundation stones. I do. Haven't found a silver dollar yet, but you never know.
God Bless

Finding coins has been in my bones since I was a small child, going back and forth with mom and dad, from and to St. Louis, Mo. Mom had given me a compact with a see through plastic lid and every time we stopped and got gas or anything, I would find one or two pennies on the ground! I had good eyes then and Mom, would say, how can you find them so fast, for she was trying to find them before me.....But I beat her and got them first! I think I ended up with about 10 or less....don't remember any more and they had to have been wheaties, as it was in the 40's! I don't know whatever became of the compact and pennies....I probably gave it all to Mom....but just don't remember, although I was a very giving person and always thought of mom first! I still miss her and she passed away in 1984! Hope you can bury some nice coins for someone else to find and enjoy the thrill of finding treasure! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

It will be cool when someone digs it up! I hope someday to find a cache of oldies!

I (and probably my brother) were given small metal banks. They were in the shape of a chest with a skull and cross bones on it and had a hinge and lock to keep it secured. Wish I had that now...talking about the 1950's coins that I had put into them...Franklin and Walking Liberty half dollars, indian head pennies, mercury dimes, buffallo nickels, etc. That was a cool bank. Someone else got 'the booty' I am sure. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Good story! I've never done that, but it sure sounds like something I would do!

Fun story. We used to bury things as kids thinking we were like pirates.

My cache story,
In '79 I was in the 6th grade. My mom had given me 3 coffee cans of coins to "go hide real good", so that my step dad couldnot find them. He had a drinking problem then, died a christian man though. Well I hid those 3 cans real good. They were as follows; one 1lb can 3/4 full of dimes, one 1lb can 1/2 or so full of nickels, and a 2 or 3 lb can 3/4 full of quarters. Well mom needed some money and told me to get the quarters. We got the can opener and opened it up so she could get some food for a few days till payday. So several months later we had to move. You guessed it! We forgot the three cans right in that little cubby hole where I had hid them so they could not be found -- or remembered. The can of 25c still was about 1/3 full as I recall. We had forgotten about it for years.

Now mom and I will talk and laugh about it once in a while. Wondering if our little cache was ever located. I don't live far from that house and wonder every time I pass (its on a main road now) what I would say to get the owners to let me have a look and see.

Though if they were recovered that would be the end of that story. Its almost more fun to wonder, but we could still reminese if they were found. It would be even more fun if it was me who recovered it.

Just thought I would share.

Neat story, Jeff, and don't be afraid to ask the owners of the place now, if you can detect for them and also offer to share! This would be a good story to write for a treasure magazine if you did find them and took pics for our forum and the mags! Do it and you won't ever be sorry for not asking &/or doing it! Do you think you would know where you buried the cans with coins, but even if you don't, I am sure you can find them with your detector, as that is a lot of metal to sound off! Go for the COINS!!! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

Thanks Jeff......It would be interesting to go after those coins.......In my mind the circumstance in which they were hidden is enough to retrieve them if you wanted to......you could also replant a new cashe if you like....you could be honest with the owner's tell them the story and offer them some ...if they would even take it ......You don't have to say how much or where they are hidden just in case there is a no go................God Bless...

Yeah, I know. Gosh. I just need to go knock on the door.

Yep! Just like Jesus knocks on our heart's door! If you don't knock then how can you get an answer....hopefully, YES!!! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty
