Calling all coin experts....Help....

Is this the 1883/2 shield nickel or not. Sure looks like the ones I see on Ebay. Don't know when or where I dug it. I'm just spending a cold winter morning looking at some old digs.
Thanks for your help.

it appears to be one of the varieties of the 3 over 2 that i have seen ...not sure which one though as there seems to be many..including coins with the 3 actually re-cut into the coin......hope that helps a little and if somebody on here knows better then you can disregard what i have said...as I'm no expert...just my opinion.

n/t

I'm certainly not an expert either. Heck, I hadn't even heard of this error before. But since it sounded interesting, I googled for a bit and found this page:
http://www.shieldnickels.net/1883_2/1883_2.html
and checked it out for a while. Going by that, I'd think it seems pretty clear that it's not an overdate but it may be the filled 2 variety. (The spacing on yours seems pretty clearly to be from '82 and the examples of the 3 over 2 varieties seem to have clear 3's but remants of the 2's showing elsewhere.)

That NE curve of the 2 could be the NE curve of an 8. I just don't like the opening on the NW corner, that should be closed, but if the 7 was shifted slightly lower than the 8 and west of it, then yes it easily could be a 8 over 7. Hard to tell from a photo without a loupe.

Wait a sec, I am thinking the 8 over 7 Indian, this is a nickel. It's still possible, I guess

Yes that is what it looks like. If you email me good pics of the front and back I can have it graded for you by more experienced collectors.
Try to use "super macro" mode on your camera. "Super macro" is usually designated by the flower symbol button.

It looks different than the filled ones I've seen pics of.
