Found this tag on the outskirts of Montreal PQ,near the U.S. border.it was suggested to me it may be a dog tag or maybe a luggage tag the letters rae C.T.P...any help is appreciated.Thanks.HH

...here is one that I found in South Western Ontario.
I always assumed that the initials C.T.P. were for Carodoc Township. I not so sure now... maybe Canine T..... Permit?

Thanks for the help!!Now I know for sure its a dog tag.Now to figure out the C.T.P. BTW do you think the number 1880 on my tag would be the year and the 1892 would be the serial #?HH

If these dog tags are anything like the ones in present-day Montreal, we can safely assume that the "1892" inscription in the center is indeed the date.

...that the top number is the date, because it is on a curve like the CTP lettering and would be on every tag produced that year.
Naturally the serial number would change with each tag, and each character would be individually punched by hand. Easier to line up on a straight line than to put them on the curve at the top. As well, a little more play in the center for the numbers to go one way or the other
Just a guess, but I'd say 1880 is the date.
