Can anybody tell me what type of case this is?

What I know about this is: The land was used by the Military from 1880-1890. I am pretty sure the case part is Copper. It measures just over 2 inches. (2-1/16")

I am thinking that it is an early Tin-Type case of some sort??? Whatever it housed is solid rust. I nicked the case and could see the shine look of copper.

If anyone has any ideas...... I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

I know this sounds dumb but i did find a metal condom case but it was thin metal and had writing on it-like sold for prevention of disease only. When was the first condom invented?
