Can Anyone HELP ME here?

I made a post a little while back inquiring if anyone had any info on the Minelab SD 2200v2. I know this isn't in the right place for a question on this machine but I can't find a forum on the SD 2200. I would just like to talk to someone that has one or has used one that has some answers. I didn't get any replies from my last post. I hope someone can throw me a rope here, Please. Thanks for any help!

cool forum :surprised: I wasn't aware they had this one here. He'll surely find his answer there!

I would like to see a specific SD & GP & GPX section here on this forum but I haven't seen one yet and this puzzles me a little.

The Minelab SD 2200v2 is the latest incarnation of the "Super Detector" (SD) for Gold Prospecting that was released a long while back as the 2000 model (if I'm not mistaken)... and it has been steadily improved to the present model which is the Pulse Induction type SD 2200 v2.

It's main feature is the ability to seek deeper targets than any other detector - possibly even deeper than the GPX-4500 if you don't mind digging for very tiny targets. The downside for this detector is that it's reputedly fond of ANY metal, especially iron. Even though it has discrimination, it still loves that iron. Some people use it for coin and relic hunting in Europe. Australians will benefit from it most because of it's strength in working in highly mineralized soils with the DD coils. It appears that the SD 2200v2 is sold with either an 11" Monoloop or an 11" DD coil depending on the country it is issued in. There's no Loudspeaker on the detector so a booster or headphones is required. Without the battery, the unit weighs 2.4kg (5.29lbs!!!!!). It has Discrimination (Ferrous), Tone Control, Auto Ground Balance (unlike the SD 2100v2 - which is the next current model down which uses Manual GB) and it features Minelab's Patented Multi-Period-Sensing Technology (MPS). MPS is what makes this detector shine because this technique causes the detector coil to fire a series of alternating magnetic pulses into the ground and this causes a metal target to change it's own magnetic field. This allows the detector to discriminate junk better and to detect targets that are smaller & deeper. According to the Minelab brochures, this MPS technology "aids in the accuracy of the Ground Balance, which limits the number of 'ghost' or false signals."

The main letdown (if you will) for the SD 2200v2 is the battery used. It's uses a somewhat dated 6V Gel-Cell battery which offers 14-15 hours (realistically 10-12hours) of continuous use (which in itself is impressive). The supplied battery is 12Ah but Minelab also offer an optional, smaller, lighter 4.5Ah battery which gives 4-5 hours running time per charge and weighs 968grams. These batteries all suffer memory-loss if used incorrectly and the battery "memory" (power storage capability) will diminish over two years or less with use - and faster without use, or via inappropriate charging. Why they didn't convert to lighter Lithium-Ion batteries is a mystery. It's not hard to re-design these detectors so I'm guessing it's to their benefit to have people skip this model and move onto the more expensive GPX-4500 for a crack at the Li-Ion battery on that machine for weight. Even the GPX-4000 still uses a Gel-Cell.

All up, the SD 2200v2 is a very powerful detector capable a really punching through hot soil and picking targets from deep down where other detectors can't see. It would out perform all lesser PI detectors and all VLF detectors on the goldfields. Only the GPX-4500/4000 offer a significant improvement although GP-3500 users would argue (and with good reason too) that their detectors would slightly exceed the SD 2200v2. Note thought that the 3500 is not listed as a 'current model' any more.

There's a North American Prospector who loves his SD 2200v2 and now owns a GPX-4000.... and I read that he just brings the 2200v2 control box with him as a backup on big trips since it's lightweight (sort of) and can use the same coils & rod assemblies as the other and previous models.

Hope this is of use.

Regards,

Marco Nero
