My brother found this pin today in a front yard along with a civil war ball. Can't read anything on the face.....is it a civil war pin????? Found at approximately the same depth (4") as the ball. Thanks for your help!!!!
 
I think you'll need to post a more detailed picture, and include one of the back as well. The latching mechanism is very telling.
 
here's a tip on taking a photo of it. since it is dark, put it on a dark back ground that will help. The camera will auto adjust and lighten it up.
 
May get a better pic this weekend. Found what we think it is......eagle holding wheat and a banner across the front. Lead to believe it has been used several years.
