Can I use an Explorer 2

Tagamet

New member
at the shore (ocean)? I've used it a LITTLE at a freshwater beach (on both wet and dry sand) and it worked great. But I'm wondering if using it at the seashore (even on dry sand) will harm it due to the ubiquitous salt and sand. I have an Excalibur winging it's way from Florida (thanks Chuck), but I love the Explorer 2 so much it feels like it might be "a step down" using the Excalibur.
Any and all help is appreciated in advance,
Tagamet

It is not a problem to use the Explorer at a salt water beach. If you look on the water and beach forum you will find that many of them do use the Exprorer or quattro at the beach.

I just purchased the Minelab Explorer 11 after using my White's XLT
since 2000. Any suggestions when I get it this Tuesday? I know there
will be adjustments on my part and I hope I made the right decision.

I use my XLT on the beach during the winter months so I hope the
Explorer will be just as good. My wife will now use the XLT.

Any stories regarding my purchase?

Thanks

I'm about 10 miles from the beach on Long Island and I use mine there all the time. It is an awesome machine at the beach and gets incredible depth. I only use it up to the shallow surf (wash) and use a "swingy thingy" just in case (don't want to get my baby wet) :) As sensitive as the excal is to small gold, I think the ExpII might actually be better.

I also have a CZ 20 but to tell you the truth, even though it's a very good machine that's also proven to give great depth, I prefer the ExpII. Just be sure your coil cover is sealed real well as salt / sand will get in there and cause falsing. What I've done (and others) is to simply epoxy the bottom of the coil and do away with the cover altogether. If you don't epoxy your cover, make sure you silicone your coil cover as well as the coil connection.

IM-16
Ferrous
deep on fast off
gain 8+ (depends on how noisy it is)
Audio 2 ( great for the beach)
Keep the sensitiviy where the machine is stable (there's been much talk about not running too hot and I believe there's some merit to that)

I work the high tide mark down to the wet sand / water and dig anything that isn't iron.

Man, I hope you have a big strong scoop! Be prepared to dig some deep holes :)

The learning curve is not quite as bad as some make it out to be. Most people recommend that new
ExpII users stick with the factory presets until they learn what good targets sound like. I have to admit that all of the tones confused the heck out of me in the beginning but once you get it, you'll be able to tune out the junk and focus on what sounds good.

Go someplace like the beach or a mulch playground where the digging is easy and dig everything at first. Tape some coins / trash to the underside of some cardboard and listen. Practice pinpointing (NOT hard) You'll get it in no time.

Good luck... you made the right decision :)

There are a lot of new folks that post on this forum but for those that remember Philo and the pictures he posted ... well that alone would give anybody the answer ... :)
I've seen enough gold jewelry that he posted to literally fill several five gallon buckets, it was almost unbelievable for some folks unless you know the man himself as some of us old timers do.
That Excalibur is a tough act to follow but the Explorer is also a killer on the beach.
You can't go wrong with either choice.

Philo still posts over on CMD and his finds are still incredible. One of these days I'll have to hook up with him and take some lessons :) He's certainly been sucessful in both sand and dirt.

Thanks Joe, I live an hour from many New Jersey beaches and during
the winter, every Friday my wife and I are down, hitting the beach.
Now with my new Exp 11 she can use the XLT all by herself.

Thanks again,

Gene
