Can one use Rechargeable Batteries in the Goldquest. Thanks

G'day,

A rechargable battery I noticed in a store here in New Zealand a few days ago is the Eneloop battery (Eneloop battery ) which seems to have a number of advantages over previously available rechargables.

Rob (RKC)

For some reason we don't seem to be getting these batteries in the U.K.
I thought they were going to be an improved alkaline but no they are NiMH. I would just like to know if the full benefits can be obtained from the use of a normal NiMH charger. They say a normal charger CAN be used.

Hi Jim,

Bill is absolutely correct, do not install the batteries backwards. That is easy to do if a person decides to change to a different battery system and change the battery connections. The concequences are not good. Generally, one or more IC's will be damaged and possibly some caps, depending upon the age of the unit. Fixing one after such a disaster could get expensive and/or time consuming.

So, with that in mind, the answer to your question is yes, rechargeable batteries can be used. I have used Nicads, NiMH's in both AA and AAA sizes. I have also used Li Ion batteries to power my GQ clones. Additional care has to be taken if the Li Ion type are used to assure one doesn't supply too much voltage.

The best and safest technique is to simply use NiMh or NiCad in place of the Alkaline batteries and use the supplied 8 battery holder. This works as well as the other techniques, especially if you are using the factory housing.

G'day Brian,

I first noticed these batteries in a retail store here in New Zealand only a few days ago ... and I would have thought that if they were being sold way down here at this far end of the world, they would have been available in the UK. Maybe they have only just come out and have not made it to a store near you ... yet!

The charger they sell with the battery can be seen at the following link Eneloop charger

Hi Rob

Last time I looked almost all of Europe had at least one dealer selling the cells but the U.K. was grayed out.
I'm having a set sent over to me so we will see how they go. I don't really want to buy another charger so will use a Ray-o-vac that charges Ni-Cads, NiMH or rechargable alkalines.
