Can someone explain BBS technology in layman's terms?

I know it works and works well and even though I use it and know how to set mine up for my ground I still don't know how it works exactly or what the multiple frequencies are doing I'm not sure I need to know as I'm doing well with it but I'm curious . Is it really putting all those frequencies into the ground? How many are transmitted and how many are received? Does it pick the best frequencies/frequency according to the ground minerals or to the target or to both? Also how is the iron mask different than discrimination found on all VLF detectors as it seems affect the sensitivity to both minerlization and electrical interference? Thanks!

I hear it doesn't really use all the frequencies on FBS or BBS machines, but rather picks the ones that are "working the best" due to ground minerals or RF noise. I would figure that by changing bands you are changing which frequencies it uses as well, and that makes me curious if one might be a bit deeper than the other on certain targets. IE: Band 2 say is using 1.5khz, while Band 1 is using 2.0khz (as the bottom frequency in it's spectrum), so maybe Band 2 will hit harder on silver, or at least in certain grounds. I doubt it makes much difference so long as they are fairly close to each other, just as things above about 14khz tend to hit harder on gold. Just my best guess. I think I also remember somebody claiming years ago that they put out the multiple frequencies as a sort of "machine gun" effect, meaning one right after the other, and remember somebody saying that's one of the reasons FBS/BBS machines should be swung slow- to give the machine time to transmit and receive each band off the target. But I have a feeling that's not the way it works. I never did get around to having my friend break out his osciloscope (know I spelled that wrong) to see exactly what the signal is doing. Maybe next time I see him. We were too busy getting drunk and flying electric RC planes. :beers:

I see people talking about square waves, sine waves and harmonics when it comes to the Sovereign and thought they might know how it all actually works.

I can't explain how it works but I wentover a target at the lake and got a very clear 38 on my Safari turned 90 degrees and got a clear hightone 6 checked a couple more times with the same signals so I dug it. The target was a gold chain with a small 925 silver ring on it. Took the ring off of the chain and it came in 38 the gold chain a solid 6 so that tells me the processor was working both frequiencies on that particular target at that time. May never run across a situation like that again but that impressed me with the ability of minelabs technology to seperate two good targets from each other in the same hole. I don't fully understand how it works I'm just glad we have machines with that capability. Nothing unusual about finding good targets next to trash so multi-frequiency must work. HH:minelab:
