I have had a xterra 50 and now a xterra 70 and the buttons seem to go flat , especially the menue button where all the adjustments are made from. I sent the xterra 50 in and minelab sent me a new control head . Is the explorer and etrac equipped with the same type touch pad? I am very gentle when I depress any buttons on the xterra's. Has anyone experienced this and what did you do to fix it?

can you rejuvenate the buttons on the xterra

but after awhile the clear plastic gets discolored and it gets hard to see the screen and the vdi numbers so I removed them. I did not like the way you had to always remove them to change batteries. I even cut out the slot for the batt door on the cover , keep in mind tho, I purchased them both used off of this forum so I can't say how they were treated prior to my use.

I was just getting to start a post about this also then I seen your post. I am having problems with my pinpoint button. I have to push it about 3-4 times to get it to work. It sounds like it still clicks when it is pushed but doemaybe it is just wore out I got it when they first came out and have used it alot.

On the screen on another type of MD I bought some of the patch filling for CD's / DVDs that you use to fill in a scratch , it worked fine and it does not take but a few minutes to cure . And it is clear as in no color. Also after this I bought the shield screen for the Droid EVO that I have and cut it out to size to cover the screen . This is just about a perfect fit for the X-Terra 705 as I put this on my X-Terra 705 screen to protect it.
And that will protect it for just about anything but getting crazy with it. This does not turn yellow in the Sun , or mine has not as of about 10 months on the unit .
On the Buttons on the 705 they are like the older keyboards that used the layer contact system to work, what is going on is the contact layer under the button that you push is wore out to the point it is not making contact , we used to fix these on the older keyboard by taking them apart . Sometimes you could just clean the contact and it would work fine , but other times the very thin layer was split and it was just about impossible to fix . Some guys would use foil to lay over the split and it would make contact . But this method does not always work and the foil would move or break and it would be making contact all the time.
About the only fix for this is to get a replacement pad as it was the only way to get it fixed right.
And on the face plate on the 705 I have not tried to take one of them apart , and some types will not come apart so you can clean them , so I would be real careful in trying to do this as you may just make it worse !
As to what the guy said above about the button not working in the cold , the plastic shrinks in the cold weather and will not let the button make contact on the part that is needed . And this looks like it is HDPE or HDPP plastic and it is not the best in the cold weather and temps.
I know this as I was head of engineering for a large manufacturing company and we had plastic injection and blow molding machines that we used to make electronic parts and items for out sourced company's .
