CARVED WOOD THING has japaneese writing on it

That 'writing' there, are you sure its Japanese? I remember I once had a rat nibble on a shovel handle up in the barn. It sort of looked like that. Of course maybe the rat was Japanese. I don't know.
 
yes there is a hole in both ends it dont make noise tried blowing in it its pretty heavy and has a leather strap attached to it the hole that runs through it has metal around the sides
 
The leaf carving has me leaning toward an umbrella handle. In some places large leaves are used as temporary umbrellas, would help if I could read chicken scratchings
