Cast Iron bullet?

Found while metal detecting a turnout off the freeway. I think it cast iron because of the pitting. If it is a bullet it don't seem spent because the shape is still uniform.

It looks a bit flared on the bottom which makes no sense for a projectile. Cast iron, I would think, would destroy a rifle barrel pronto. Laplander is on the right track........I’ve seen something similar to secure iron band onto or into wood too.
