I mentioned some time ago that I'd post the Education Challenge coin I had found in a playground. Here are the pics of both sides with another coin for size comparison:

These are called Challenge coins because they challenge the receiver to do his or her best.
In the military, they can be either Challenge coins or Commanders Coins. They show comradre of people in a unit. In a bar situation they become Challenge coins. Someone says he is from your unit, the coin proves it. Sometimes the challenge is made that each person is to produce their challenge or commanders coin...the one without his on him...buys a round of drinks for everyone else who does have their coins.
Here is a military one from the Air Force...the Air Force Cops - now known as Force Protectors:

Prior to the term Force Protectors it was Air Force Security Police. Before that, Air Police and I think before that it was Military Police.
I have a challenge coin from the Air Force Security Police Association which I belonged to as I was once an Air Force Security Police NCO (Flight Chief...or the equivalent of a Shift Sargeant). I worked Law Enforcement but there was another side of the 'house' called 'Security'...they protected the aircraft and the nukes.
Just a little info. I didn't see my coins on the harddrive but when I find them I will post them as well.
Do an eBay search on Commander's Coin, Challenge Coin, or even something like Special Forces coin and you will be amazed at the variety of these coins out there to be lost and found.
I just did an eBay search under Challenge coin and i returned with 3472 hits!
