Chasing some ghosties.......

Got out today for a bit to lay down the trac on some previously hunted areas....I was hearing lots of tones that were high chirps and some even hit well one way but couldn't seem to lock on at 90 deg. I went after some great sounds that read 45 or 47 but the ferrous was bouncing above and below 22. Once I opened her up, that -47 was gone. Kinda frustrating, so the next signal that was like that I hit the quick mask and of course EVERYTHING sounded clear as a bell and the readings went to 35-45, and so did the spot next to the left....and the spot to the right and in fact everywhere else around it. I took the quick mask back off and changed the sens from auto to manual 25 and basically the same thing. I KNOW you guys have to be seeing this as well. I was running standard coin mode, fast and deep off, sensitivity auto +3,gain and limits 30, conductive sounds, multi sounds. I did manage to pull a couple wheats and a nice silver ring tho. I saw a lot of 11-17 or 11-19 What are those? I passed them up. Any suggestions on the chirpy little things? Not ready to toss the trac in the river yet but today I feeling like it!!! lol

Thanks, Duane

Hi N2Treasure,

I get those ghost hits myself sometimes, hate it. I would get those with my Whites as well before I got the E trac. Maybe some of the guys with experience can tell us what that might be.
11/12-16 on my machine, in my area, is usually a pull tab. HH

Most likely what you are experiencing is rusty iron nails and the like falsing off the end of said nails. That is why it does not signal at 90 degrees and the wetter the soil the worse it will be.The easy way to tell the nail false signals is to wiggle the coil until you get the best response and mark that spot and then hit pinpoint mode and if it is a nail it will pinpoint several inches away off the front of the coil from the previous position. If you dig the nail signals going by the wiggle pinpoint method they will be outside your plug edges unless you dig a 10" plus plug,Ray.

Pesky nickel, shotgun shell, pull tab range. Let your ears do the thinking, If it's sweart and it repeats, Dig it!

Get that coil over something good. I'd like to see you post some great Silver coin.

I was very happy to dig my first V nic the other day. It came in at 8/8 due to the other stuff around it, plus a '15d wheat that came in at 1/31 for the same reason. But in both cases the sound was right on for a nickel and penny. both were 6-8" deep and the numbers were stable. Dig those good sounds w/o worrying too much about the #'s.Yes there will be trash in the pouch at the end of the day. My take on it at least. terry

About the Chirps...I investigate by opening up to quick mask, like you did, if the cursor still stays in the upper right hand area (or close to it) and depth is deep ... DIG IT. If the cursor drops down to the bottom right or all around it is trash for me almost all the time I have checked. A few times ,NOT MANY, the chip has been a good target but only if DEEP. If you are learning your machine then stick to the solid hits with reapeatable sounds. If you are board then dig the iffys to just get yourself more sure of the E sounds. My experiance is that the deep coins might chirp untill I zero in on them then the sound gets more prononced and the numbers tend to stabalize as well as I swing directly over it. I look at the quick mask if I am getting a solid number or feel it is trying to hit close to the a solid area and the depth corresponds with that then I will dig it. Pinpointing also gives me a great "feel" if it is a small deep object before I dig.
Hope that helps,

When I'm hunting I too investigate a lot of iffy signals I think may be silver. You never really know what it's going to be until you dig. Sometimes junk beside or on top of silver can throw the signal way off. Digging those weird signals can pay off big time. I've been amazed at what I've found by doing just what you are doing. But it doesn't happen very often. Yes, most of the time it's a bust. But the eventual pay off can be huge! I don't dig 11-17's and 11-19's much because they are often pull tabs. If you can get those chirps to repeat from one direction and you've got the time, check them out. If the chirps repeat from two directions, well, you know, dig it for sure. Sorry you're feeling so frustrated. I think you just need more time hunting and investigating. Check out different sites and look for those deep 45's, 46's & 47's. They are out there! The ferrous number can be anywhere between 8 and 12 in general. Best of luck to you and please don't chuck your E-trac into the river!!

Try lowering gain to about 25-26, stay in auto +2 or +3. A lower gain will help reduce signal blending and auto sens will reduce falsing and iron coming thru discrimination. If there is Iron junk everywhere, I would try fast on and use a slooooowww sweep in the trash. Good job on checking with quickmask. getting 34-35 fe # consistently, usually always means iron. But if you see low 20's or teens fe # mixed in, maybe worth investigating.

Sometimes if I get a lot of iron falsing, I edit my pattern to blank out 1-48, 1-49, 1-50, 2-50. this is where iron tends to jump discrimination (on my machine) and "false". this usually only happens with maxed out settings.(sensitivity, gain)

Also, have you tried noise cancelling? (Channel 9 seems to be the most stable and allows the highest sensitivity no matter where I am...? )

Good Luck Duane! Hang in there:thumbup:
