Chatter on the F70

dbax

New member
I paid around $580 for my F70 with the Fisher 11" DD coil -- I had to send this unit into Fisher after two months of use because of the constant chatter -- (was I sold a second??) -- I will not tell you who I bought it from this may not have been their fault at all? Fisher was very helpful -- my machine was chattering constant, just could not quiet it down and the Fisher Tech told me to call him the next time I went out to hunt. After many infield conversations with the Fisher Tech he said to send it in -- he could hear the chatter for himself and with me following this instructions for settings in attempts to get this to stop -- I was still finding targets, the target hits were sharper and loader than the chatter, so I was finding things but talk about the ???? torture it was a relief to stop searching. I sent it in and about a week later they sent it back to me with a brand new 11"DD attached and they had opened up the F70 case and replaced the battery compartment and springs -- hum, not sure what that would have to do with the problem? When I got this baby back it was a whole new experience, and setting up Mudpuppy's advised settings, this time, produced a fantastic run for the last 8 months of 2013. So, if you are having, still, such a problem then I would suggest getting a Fisher Tech in the field with you, via cell phone, hearing is believing. But first try the following settings, thank Mudpuppy, and see if this helps, if not then get on the horn with Fisher. Disc 18, Sens 60, dE, Thres -3, Tone 3H and no Notching. This machine has never suffered from EMI interference -- there are a lot of power lines in my town and power boxes all over the parks -- I have searched and found targets right up next to these massive power boxes in their cages (hum, maybe the metal, screen, chain linked protective boxes are acting like some kind of shield?). At first all the chatter was being blamed on EMI but this proved not to be the case, something else going on. Fisher, by replacing the DD coil is indirectly blaming the coil, but why did they open up the case? The battery compartment looked okay to me, but what do I know -- It is definitely a different machine and a different experience. Hope this helps someone. P.S I reset my Thres to -2 because, according to a test chart provide by another member the -2 settings in these air tests were nearly identical as the +2 -- this means the -2 Thres setting is better than -1 and 0 and +1 and verily nearly as good +2 all the way up to the +7 setting. Looking at this test chart it would appear we are talking about differences of 1/2". The +6 setting, for example, tested out as inferior to the -2 setting (that is minus two) -- I am sorry I do not remember who did this test or supplied this air test chart -- Maybe someone else remembers the member that posted the chart and can redirect us, thanks. We really have a good crew of F hunters this year!:clapping: I bought mine from a local dealer, got the 10" and the 11"dd, a sandscoop, a digger, and a Fpoint for I think total of @750? Didn't know a thing, hunted in AT for most of the first year before I found this Forum..

There have been a lot of guys come and go trying to master the power of the Septegenarian series of F's...most considered them too chatty and got rid of them...the ones that take the time to master them generally post some great stuff...like you, I have not had any trouble up against the link, or the big humming transformers or under the wires or anything EMI related...

I got the settings I run from a great F70 hunter named Zeekeys I met here on the Forum. I sure hope he chimes in again someday as he would really be proud of you guys!. He was a great encouraging force here and hunted pretty much daily (like Jimtn) always great to see what he found,...

I took your advice Dbax, and set up -2 thresh instead of my usual -3...lots of little secrets on the settings that have been completely hidden until you guys came along...like that disc being sub 5 for max results and all..up til now we (or I) have just been winging it...nobody can talk me out of the DP tones though, or that coil hop method of pinpointing....that one guy Scott posted some pretty good vids late last summer...what was his handle? Ash07 or something similar?
Well, we sure are having fun here busting each other! Really great posts for getting through the winter, and all in Fun!:buds:

Hey Mud, good to get a little history -- I tried the DP tone but just could not get the hang of it, maybe I been tooooo long on the 3 and 3H setting, a lot similar to the F2, which was my last Fisher. What you are used to, I guess. I tried the pumping action you talk about for ID purposes but could not get that to work in the tones I use, so this may be something peculiar to the DP tone. What I find using the 3 and 3H is what some call (me too) the "wiggle", getting over the target really pin points it. One thing I have found in ID-ing the target, if you allow the coil to read more than once and narrow down heading fro the wiggle, if the target cuts out or even quits then you can bet it is bogus, well not a coil or ring. while the F70 and F75 are quick readers if you give them just a bit more time over the target it will and can change its "mind" -- just like that girl friend in my high school days -- how times have changed, I guess the little immature ladies of today pass out the favors like not time in history of our nation -- whoever said that the more education leads to less problems? That is another one of those lies people tend to believe as truth -- if ye get my meaning. You are correct, Mud, this is a great site and the guys have made my hunts better and more fun -- thanks, one and all. Dan

I think thats it, Dbax.... Tone wise I guess its what a guy got used to in the past?, I jumped from AT straight to DP and find it very difficult to hunt in any other mode...we do have something in these F series here, with the modulated or proportional audio or whatever its called...I dont know, I have not used the PP button for a long time, hop coil on the target..used to do the wiggle, but now the hop! Seems the tone tells a guy everything, depth, composition of target, slants, spills, stacks, coins on edge...pretty sure a fellow could hunt blind if needed, and I do at night..I hit a ping, and zero in on location by quickly and gently tapping the coil on top of it while rotating 90 degrees...quicker to actually do in field than type this out...might be a drawback, since I seldom look at the screen, and go by tone exclusively...it dont work if a guy is running too hot a set up...the signal is just too strong, and hard to cipher from everything else...But, as you know, I'm only after targets in the 5" on up to surface range...I have 3 tones on my water unit, well, 4 if you count iron, and I cant tell the tonal diff between a dime, copper penny, or a Q or a silver ring...With the F70 in DP I CAN!
not quite the diff between a copper Penny and a dime, sure, depending upon depth and size of target, a guy can call it with about a 60% accuracy.. for everything else, dead on! Thats why I think my Dream machine would be a waterproof '70..even running light the deeper silver or clad really pops!
I guess if a guy was intent on going for just gold, a fellow has to get their ears tuned in right..those foil/nickel tones are sort of soft for my liking...but hey, I only got one good ear anyway, so might be a 3H or 4H would be better? I doubt I'll ever try them though..still learning the DP after all these years...When it comes to immature ladies passing out favors, you got my attention!...I've been working on getting some favors out of the same gal for nigh on 30+ years with minimal success! Still, I try, and thats gotta be worth something right?

I have gotten used to the 4h tones when I got the F5 and just love the feedback I got, so naturally it was a no brainer on the F70 to use the same. I think it's all about what a guy gets used to, my brain has gotten used to the sounds and I can tell what section the target is in just by the sound then the pin pointing and recovery starts. I too have learned a ton from this site, from my CZ5 to the fisher F5 then the F70. We have a goo thing here a group of great people with alot of really good information that helps a ton on getting targets found and machine issues solved.
