cherry picking

I'm gonna try a new way of hunting coins in the park when i get a chance. I'm gonna black out the screen then accept all the coins i can get ahold of with a medium block and then go hunt the local trashy park. I know its cherry picking but hope it works.

Anyone tried this before?

I would hope you were drunk when you wrote that. I am trying to learn all i can about my detector. Please do not reply to an honest ? i had with such gibberish.

You'll be amazed at what you find. Good luck!

Thanks John,

Im really considering/wanting a 8" or a 5"x10" joey. Just dont want to part with the $$$ around christmas. Wife might think im selfish......

again..ha ha

Hey Stoop,

Nothing wrong with cherry picking. I do it all the time when I'm running short on hunting time and don't want to dig a lot of pulltabs. It's a good way to pick up a few extra dollars that will eventually add up to the cost of another coil. When I hunt a trashy park, I love the 5" coil although I haven't tried the 8".

*L* yeah I've tried it with colonial coins and silver coins. You'll be surprised what else hits in these areas. It can make finding coins quicker but it's not foolproof.

For instance, if you program a colonial large cent - it'll also pull in clad quarters because they are the same approx. size and hit in the same conductivity range. You'll find certain pieces of aluminum will consistantly fool you and so on.

I prefer using digital and only digging certain ranges of numbers unless the flutey tone indicates a definite 'dig'. For instance, if I'm cherry picking a site for large cents - I'll only dig 00-26 to 00-28 signals. If there are colonial LC's to be found at a site, most will register in this range. I use this philosophy when large areas have to be covered and I know the basic history of the place. It has proven to work so far for me.

You can only cover so much ground and you have to increase your odds as best as you can. Some will say dig every signal. I say dig only coins and jewelry when you are coinshooting in cherry pick mode. The EX II lets you come as close to doing exactly that once you learn the machine and what it is telling you. I've done it in moderate junk level areas. I don't hunt high level junk areas - there's too many good unhunted places where I live.

Good luck! HH!

I find if you want to hunt for clad and new coins this will work, but the older and deeper coins you may miss alot of them as in the ground they will not read like to they do in the air when you learned them. I find in this case and when trashy I built a pattern I use where the whole top is opened a 1/2 inch down and almost all the way across the top, now I will hear all coins, even those deep ones or those close to trash other than the nickles and not to many pull tabs.If i want nickles I will use the large cursor and learn in the nickles.

You're right on the money leaving the top half inch open. I use IM -10 and listen to the tone as well as watching the cursor. I've only found a half dozen seated dimes with my explorer since 2001 but they hit all along the top of the screen about half way to the left. They were so-so signals but they were repeatable signals. I use an old Explorer and don't have the dual digital readout.

Rule of thumb: the heavier the trash; the smaller the coil. I have made some of my best finds going over "hunted out" areas, especially in heavy trash. My favorite small coil is the Sun Ray S or X 5. Slow down, carefully check any repeatable sound and you'll find more. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

I agree, get a 5", I use the 5" EXcellerator coil found @ Kellyco and it is a great little coil, goes really DEEP, waterproof, cheap, tough, durable, accurate, simply amazing!

With explorer, to cherry pick primarily silver, while in the "learn mode" I set up an iron mask screen which is black... then I remove the black in a small portion of the upper right hand corner which will only allow silver and aluminum to register. "crank up the discrimination" comes from when using the Sovereign or most detectors. you must crank the knob until only silver is heard...

I have several Explorer detecting screens on my web site given to me from other detectorists... so go to my web site and look for those links..

Remember, discrimination is only a tool and should be used sparingly because when using discrimination in any amount, YOU WILL MISS COINS!
