Hi Joe & welcome aboard. If you are talking about a detector then lots of beginners have bought and liked the Garrett Ace machine. Around 200 bux. Good luck, Steve in so az

How much are you looking to spend? Are you mainly going to search old places for old stuff, or parks and schools for modern stuff?
God bless.

Mike

Welcome Joe-p and there are many CMD Forum members that can help you concerning detectors, hunting and areas to hunt....depending on what and where you want for enjoyment and goodies! I pray and hope you like our MD hobby and do find lots of nice coins, relics and etc. May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

I was in your position 3 months ago having been a treasure hunter all my life but I had never used a metal detector to find my treasure. At age 47 I finally took the plunge and did lots of research reading forms and quickly realized people get attached to there brands and are quite loyal to them. I noticed that a lot of people started out with a beginner rated machine and quickly out grew it so I opted to go for a little better detector that had a proven record as reliable and versatile in all ground conditions via a manual ground balance. New or used was my next decision and after loosing several auctions on eBay I finally was able to find a used MD from Badged Metal Detectors. Two other factors important for me and related to each other, weight and Type of batteries. Have only been out salt water beach hunting 3 times so far as ground is frozen here in Nova Scotia but I am looking forward to spring land detecting. Ground balancing of the MD was the biggest concern but it is very easy and makes the MD more versatile. Oh I wanted an all metal mode along with discrimination mode. Read the forms and reviews Joe and remember the hunt for the detector can be lots of fun.
From one newbie to an other welcome to the Form.:canadaflag:

yep!!!!, a christian metel detecting forum. aint it cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i know that you want a detector that will hunt land and water! i still have to recomend either the excalibur or a cz21!
if you hunt with a land detector near or in the water, one drop or fall and its bye bye detector!

Yeah, welcome to the group!

I use a White's MXT, too much machine for my abilities, but still learning and enjoying every minute of it!

Welcome to the forum Joe. All brands make a good one I started with a radio shack then had two bounty hunters . No matter what people say a bounty hunter will find good coins . Then I had a minelab x-terra 50 bought it used and man did I like it. Turned my hunted oout spots into new ones. Now I have a minelab x-terra 70 I got for 375 used off the classifieds I really like it and this one I will keep for a long time. It is what ever you learn and get used to that is the best detector for you. Can not wait to start seeing what you find when you get a detector.
There are alot of good people on here and we are family post often and stay for a while.

well peeps it looks like I'm looking at a Garrett Ace 250. with the extras it looks like a good buy... and much cheaper then I thought.. I always believe you get what you pay for.. but in this case it looks to be the opposite..

Never had one but heard alot of good about them. Congatulations and have fun with it.

hey about the joliet group.. ya would love info on them.. that would be great....

I know that there are easy ones out there.. I want to get one a bit better then that.. I build computers and Never got the best of the best.. I was always one step behind everyone.. cheaper that way... but don't want to get a "cheap" one that I will get bored with.. so I'm still looking and wondering..
Maybe someone can give me a idea of what ones to get at a 6 to 700.00 or cheaper but don't want the cheap to be in the machine.. want a better MD ( getting with the short hand finally )

I like my minelab x-terra 70 . It is light and loaded with features and I got it used for 375 they are over 600 new. Now the x-terra 705 is the new model of the 70. I think you would like one the have multiple tones and go deep. For that kind of money all brands have a real good one.

you could get a Mineab Exterra 50 or 70. The Ace 250 is great for the money but it is a step behind many machines.
