Thanks for the response and explaination on the indicatior co-ordinates. It would seem that I am about to step into the light here (or the dark side if posting on the whites forum) and have purchased site unseen, on e-bay, a xs with few hours on it. It's comming with three coils and a x1 probe. I think I paid a bit too much, maybe. I needed to determine a few things since my time in the field is limited and needs every advantage I can give it. That being said I would have to assume the xs has the same abilities as the Ex 2 as far as detecting and I will have to utilize what displey is there knowing the tones will by my greatest guide. I intend to utilize it on grounds I have personally hunted with my DFX and see if it finds additional goodies. Another question about the xi probe this time. Will the probe work on either Explorer? I cant see why not????
Regards

I must have had a brain fart when I typed that in! I did mean an X1 probe. Either Explorer with an X1 probe is really an awesome combination! I don't know what I would do without mine.
Happy Hunting,
Chuck

Yes the probe will work w/either Explorer.

Chuck, I have tried that with the DFX and Explorer both ways and could not see any serious difference. I found a few with the DFX I had missed with the Explorer and a few with the Explorer I had missed with the DFX. What I do see is I am more effective with the Explorer on deep coins although I have found a lot of deep coins with the DFX. A good test is the DFX using Zero Discrimination ALL Metal and the Explorer at IM-16 for depth. I think you will find the Explorer has finer level of discrimination or at least that is what I have seen.
Good luck and look forward to hearing how it goes,
HH, Cody

I actually bought the X1 for the EX II before I bought the machine and used it on my XS with some dificulties keeping it in the upper housing. It did however function electronically.

Ed,
The Explorer II upper shaft is not compatible with the XS model and vis versa. Therefore you should use the X-1 which is mounted on the correct upper shaft for that model. The electronics of the X-1 are the same - just the shaft it is mounted on is different.

I Think? I've only used in my life, two homemade models, one Heathkit home assembled, a Bounty Hunter Landstar and the two Explorers. I can't comment on the Whites models however my Father (assembled the two homemades and the Heathkit)owns a Whites IDX but it has not gotten much use. I have hunted with others that have used nearly every other brand with assorted success. I have actually considered purchasing a Fisher since purchasing the Explorers.
It's all good.
Happy Hunting to all!

Fisher makes some great detectors. I think the CZ70 is one to look at for depth. I also like the CoinStrike for heavy trash. It has a strange pinpoint sound and a somewhat poor all metal sound. It also has great depth. I think I went through most of them over the years and they are excellent detectors. The ones I used were sensitive to iron and they use what is called a chirp discriminator which is why they run with a silent threshold as I recall. Some of them now run with a threshold as the older ones did back before the VLT blew the TR detector away.
I have hunted with some of the Heithkit detectors and they were sensitivity for a detector that was from a kit. I would see more of them around back when it was mostly Fisher, Whites and Garrett with a few others that were not the main ones.
Well, good luck on finding that gold coin,
HH, Cody
