City Marshall badge found, could it be real?

Tony N (Michigan)

Active member
Found this badge about a foot down at a park. It is metal.

Did a search on City Marshall badges and they go back to the mid 1800's. I think Wyatt Erp might have been a city marshall, but not sure if this badge is real.

The last think in the pic might be from a harmonica?

Anybody know if I can know if it is a real badge?

Actually, I think the last thing is part of an accordion. I recently was discussing a similar find with a friend who did a fair amount of research on it. The reed for the F note would pass through that little bracket. The F is imprinted at the base.

I believe you are right about that. I wonder if part of the metal reed broke and so it was tossed?

Still curious if the badge is for a real City Marshall or not.

Think Wyatt only rose to level of assistant or deputy marshal in Dodge City and Tombstone but be that as it may - I'm no expert on badges but if you check for City Marshal or Marshal badges they look more substantial and more shaped and tooled that that one but who knows could've been from a smaller town with a smaller budget for badges.
How does it feel - does it feel solid and substantial like you'd expect a "real" badge to feel or is it more "tinny" like a kid's badge?

I don't know what a kid's badge would feel like but it seems rather substantial. It isn't really thick but why would a kid wear a badge saying "City Marshal"? If I were a kid I'd rather wear a badge saying "Texas Ranger" or "Sherrif" or "Police" on it.

Tony,
That is a really excellent point !
Sometimes I shake my head and say how can I be so stupid and miss the blatantly obvious.
I certainly would have looked at that as a kid and said "What's a City Marshall?"
Based on your point alone - I'd have to say who'd bother wasting their time copying a City Marshal badge when you could go straight for the big time with US Marshal - or some other more popular title.
Based on that alone I'll bet it probably is real - so Nice Find !
