Civil Opinions On SE Versus Etrac (A Few Questions)

Not looking to start a flame war. Just curious as to your reason's why you opted for the SE over the Etrac, as I may add one or the other to my line up down the road. After playing with a friend's Etrac I'd have to wonder if the SE would be a better option for me to consider now. I'm not a fan of the way everything gets compressed into the 12th line on the Etrac. Makes no sense to me why they would do that. I have owned three Explorer II's in the past. The discrimination pattern the Explorer uses seems to make much more sense. I hear the Etrac is a bit better in trash than the SE (if using the same size coil) but that depth is on par with each other for the most part.

Then again, I liked the weight of the Etrac. The SE I would expect to be heavier and of course to have the less comfortable angle of the hand grip like the older Explorers. I guess though it'd be lighter than my previous Explorers were thanks to the Pro Coil on the SE, and I could probably fit a lipo in the battery holder to drop some more weight. May have to consider an SE unless somebody can argue why the Etrac is the better machine to them. In particular I'd like to hear why you think the discrimination pattern the Etrac uses has any advantages over the Explorer style.

i got my se cause at time no etracs were avaiable love my se now feels good in hand not hard to me to learn making good finds with it excellent in iron if i hunt realllll slowwww etrac has one thing i like thats both digital and smart screen visible at same time great idea helps alot in iding items now i have to toggle back en forth to get same info kind of a pain but still not at all unhappy with me se much better then my old xlt and the xlt was also and still is a very good detector just not a minlab explorer se pro that truly rocks

The Etrac wasnt an option when i bought the SE. But i didnt upgrade. Im going to say no one ever thinks an up grade is better than what they have. The SE is doing a great job for me after i got past the learning curve. The pay off and expense for me just isnt there yet. Just like the argument about the Pro VS the SEF coil. Everyone has a choice and sees things differently. It comes down to what are you hunting for and what do you expect this machine to do differently for you. If you cant see a benefit then its not an upgrade. These darn machines are so closely matched when you get a guy who knows how to use them.

I purchased my SE back in 2007 (pre E-Trac era), followed by a few after market coils...then I bought the Pro Coil, and have been 100% satisfied with the machine and coil since.

Both machines are proficient in finding deeply buried targets in trashy ground.

The bigger difference is one's hunting ability/technique/experience....give 20 people with differing lengths of experience the same Minelab machine, and see how much different each person's quality and quantity of finds will be. There's no equal to hard earned hours/days/weeks/years spent hunting with your machine!!

The price of a new E-trac and the fact my SE still amazes me keeps me happy with it . I traded for it used a couple of years ago and have never had a problem with it except the arm cup breaking. I bought a nice aluminum one so that's not a problem and my wall charger took a dump on me ( that didn't break the bank either .

I hunted with the Trac for all of last year and liked it very much, It was quick and very stable. But I felt that I was missing things. Don't get me wrong it worked great and I found lots of great stuff. I decided late in the year to switch back to the SE and got 1 hunt in before the snow flew. and man what a difference, I pulled out so many coins in about 2 hours I couldn't believe it. So now the the ground has been frozen I haven't been able to get out but about a week ago me and Tim went to the Barber shop and did some double hammering. The SE didn't let me down at all, within about 20 minutes I pulled out an 1872 H Canadian half, 1891 V nick 1919 wheat and a 1915 buff. There is just something about the SE that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy like you know your not missing things.

I guess to be fair.... you are asking the Explorer forum i would expect the replies to be a little more our way. Its kind of like asking when the SE come out whose up grading from the exp II. A lot of people still prefer the exp II to the SE. Its hard for us to put down a good solid machine that we have learned. A good many times your finds tend to drop off when upgrading or changing machine. I cant say many noticed that with the up grade to the Etrac. I assume you are asking the same question in the Etrac forum.

I have an EX2...SE...and the E-Trac. That being said...I was clicking on some of our forum sponsor's sites and was AMAZED at the deals on a NEW SE PRO.

For cryin' out loud....$1098 for the SE PRO and some very sweet accessories...and I mean GOOD accessories that add about another $200 to an already sweet deal. Some of our sponsoring dealers are even giving you YOUR choice on some different accessories to choose from:thumbup:

That is the best deal I have EVER seen on a new SE.

My point....already having the Explorers and the E-Trac that I do...I am seriously and honestly thinking of buying a new SE PRO and setting it back in case my current one would go kapoot for some reason.

It's like my Sunray pro gold headphones...I have 3 pairs of them in case one gets broken...wears out...or gets lost.

my suggestion buy Etrac and explorer, test them- with nails, in the field on the same targets,in the iron and decide what is better for you. I use explorer and was looking all possible info about etrac to have knowledge what is different in this two detectors, some was saying Etrac faster and I thought I need faster detector, but after I saw Etrac test video I decided to repeat with my old explorer XS and look how Etrac is faster. No I dont want Etrac and what I can see its faster possibly just on screen but not under coil if you use explorer without discrimination. Stasys

I agree with you Bryce, the SE Pro has to be one of the best buys on the market right now for a serious detector. I have seen good used ones sell for as little as $575.

The Se has got to be the best buy today. Really do your home work and scour the net to find the best deal.I purchased one in December and received the following extras, Gamin GPS, Motorola walkie talkies,Cool Pic camera,Minelab carry bag, digger and sheath, and a multi purpose knife all for $1098 with free shipping. This special ends Jan. 31
