Civil War Camp Gives Up 1823 Large Cent

Hi, all:

Had a great day today with my F75. Found an 1887 IH penny and an 1823 over 2 Large Cent. Oldest American minted coin I've ever found. Been years since I found a large cent. Found four bullets, a Gallagher cartridge, a flat button with the words "Imperial Quality" on the back, as well as an intact shank. Not a button guy, so if any of you experts know anything about the button, let me know. Also found a couple of harmonica reed pieces, part of a brass spoon and three toe protectors. One perfect and two mangled. This is the fifth IH penny I've found in this Camp/Skirmish site. All post Civil War.

Question for you: If you're routinely hunting CW sites, then what would you say is the average of coins, to other targets ? Ie.: if you count ALL the conductive targets you're finding ( bullets, junk, slag, buttons, etc....) and compared to each coin you eventually turn up: What is the ratio of coins to other targets in CW sites ?

And if need be, for sake of the question: I'm assuming it's a better ratio in the "camps" versus the "battle sites". So for purposes of this question: The ratio in Camps, not battle sites. Here in CA we have no CW sites obviously. But we do have CA military sites (forts, camps, etc...) which can date to as far back as CW era. So I'm wondering how our ratios compare to yours.

Camps are better as items are concentrated. As far as ratios, here is the best I can do. I've been hunting camps since 1980. I've dug 9100 plus bullets. That's camps and battle sites. I've dug 39 coins in camps. I estimate camps bullets to be around 7500. That doesn't include buttons and other brass items. Hope that gives you and idea. But, as they say, "your mileage may vary". All I can say is keep on digging.

thanx for taking a crack at my question ! If I go strictly by the 7500 bullets estimate , vs 39 period coins, that comes out to almost 1 to 200 ratio. But you're saying that "doesn't include buttons and brass items". Thus just off the top of your head, if you include buttons, buckles, slag, brass items .... and even fluke modern stuff: What would you say is the ratio then ? 300 to 1 ? 400 to 1? etc......

Id say it pushes 400, but that's a lot of "math" 8^)
