Civil War Knife?

Found this little knife about 6 inches deep in the middle of the forest near Chicago.

Could it potentially be a civil war knife?

It simply has U.S. engraved on the handle so I thought it might be Civil War era. I know those Confederate belt buckets are a pretty penny, could this knife have some value?

If that is an aluminum handle the knife is more likely from a 20th century US military mess kit.....HH
