Civil War Knife?

Found this knife today in the forest with my Compadre. Does anyone know if it's civil war era? It has US inscribed on the handle. Thanks for looking!:tesoro:
 
It looks like one of those mess kit knives that I believe was supplied to the military starting with WW1. If you go on EBay and do some key word searches like WWI knife, vintage mess kit knife or something similar, I think you will find your knife.
