Recently I asked a question is anyone out there detecting, because I had not seen one other detectorist. After I made the post I ran into someone wading and detecting the shore of Lake Michigan. I got to talk t him, and he seemed like a nice guy. Today I did not see anyone detecting, but I did see signs of someone detecting. Holes that had not been back filled, and holes that looked like they had removed a shovel full of dirt. We all screw up a hole now and then, but it looked like that happened with every hole they dug. Not that I`m a pro detectorist, but this person doesn`t know what their detector is saying. I found a clad quarter within one foot of a hole they had dug. Some of the old digs I checked with my detector, and found a strong target. They sounded like big iron to me. This park has some big plumbing running through it. I have dug some myself, and have found buried shut off valves or what ever. People like this are going to ruin it for me. If you read this post, and are detecting parks in Kenosha, Wisconsin clean up you act. I don`t want to get blamed for your handy work. You will be the first to complain if we get band from the parks. Sorry about the rant, but this irrigates me. I didn`t misspell irritate.

Nothing new here. Everyone is jumping in on new leisure activities. The same bad behavior is taking place in RVing and other outdoor activities.

Hi 396nova,

I share in your frustration and have experienced this as well. I went around a couple times this summer filling in the holes that some clown didn't properly cover. It makes me get very upset as well. It is true (like Rob IL mentions) there are 'bad eggs" in every sport / hobby out there and very unfortunate. In our hobby it is people bringing SHOVELS into parks / beaches / school yards etc especially with the rise in precious metals every guy (no gender intended) and "the horse they rode in on" is out buying a detector and not havings a clue about PERMISSION, TOOLS, HOW TO DIG etc. That small percentage can close parks / schools / beaches etc for the large percentage of us that take all the care in the world to open doors (to new places) to enjoy this hobby we love. If they just took the time to learn about tools, retrieval techniques and permission.....

Thank you for taking the time to fill in the holes.

- Jim

Been there-done that(filled some jerk's holes) Fortunitely these people don't last long in this hobby and quickly get bored when they don't get rich the first time out.

On my last outing came upon old cellar hole where someone was digging large shovel fulls and leaving holes unfilled, and even worse they were tearing apart stone walls....if i ever find out who they are they will be reported to police and dismantling stone walls is not allowed...just some smuck who doesnt give a cr*p....and this was in central mass....Warwick to be exact....hope your reading this cause i will find you!

This is why I support munincipalities requiring permits, and actually telling their parks/city/law enforcement employees to check for permits. The only problem is that munincipalities can't fathom that a hole can be properly dug without damage. They go to the extreme and only let you use a screwdriver in a limited fashion. But I will call the cops next time I see a idiot leaving holes. These 'newbies' know better. They are the same jerks that throw their litter on the ground and other public nuisance activities.....grrrrrrrrr.

I hope that you find whoever it is. That stuff is just not right.

I'm here in Boston and your right. It s clowns like that destroy it for us. I catch them I'll make them a Poster Child for the Boston Globe, Herald and any other media I can find. Thanks. PEACE:RONB

Got to remember that most folks never look at any detecting forums or read books on how to be proficient at detecting. They just slap in the batteries and head out with shovel in hand. Of course, if they had any common sense they would try to NOT make a mess, but many are just lazy, stupid, or both.

If you can catch someone doing it, try to talk to them politely about how that behavior can result in bans on detecting. Otherwise, fill thier holes as neatly as possible so others don't think you left them.

common problem, and really "screws" with my head!.all you can do
is make sure YOU do the 'RIGHT THING!"..what else can ya really do?
just sayin'

I am completely new to detecting and haven't even received my Tracker IV yet that i'm going to purchase tomorrow (VERY new, lol told ya) but in the short time my buddy has turned me on to this hobby, i've learned tons of things about ethics, rules, regulations, how to dig (and how NOT to dig), how to use my detector, etc. It pains me to think that people are running out to the nearest Hobby Lobby thinking they are going to shovel up a diamond. IMO this is a hobby that is done over a long period of time and if people are just going to make fields look like the game Dig Dug then those people should stick to something else! I would hate to have someone ruin what I feel is going to be a lot of fun for me just because they are ignorant.

great post 396!

After Christmas I seen a lot of new MDers athe beach, most leaving holes. But theres fewer everytime I go so hopefully this is mostly a seasonal thing. If they dont make the effort to learn the right way to detect they will soon be out of the hobby anyway. I hope little damage was done to our hobby.

I recently came across a man in the park digging holes with a regular shovel while metal detecting. I stopped, went over and explained what he was doing would get us in trouble. I showed him how to retrieve a target and leave not trace that we had retrieved a target. He thanked me for taking the time to show how to retrieve a target. I went to the store and when I came back buy the park I stopped by to see how he was doing. He showed me some of his finds and showed me that he had been filling his holes as best as he could. He even told me that he was going to stop in at our club here in town. He thanked me again. I have not seen him at the meeting yet, but I know I Helped one person new to the hobby learn something new.
