Coil Cable

unearth

Member
Ok...I know, I know...I should know this, but I've been hearing different stories of late about the correct and/or better way to wrap the coil cable on the Explorer line of detectors. The Explorer, Explorer II, SE, SE Pro, and now, E-Trac. Here goes...do you wrap the excess coil cable around the detector shaft or do you keep it straight and not wrap it around the shaft? On the Minelab units, the ones without the probe, I know the cable goes thru the shaft. I'm talking about the ones with the probe and the cable is on the outside of the shaft. I'm told, on the Excal units, to wrap the cable, but on the turf units, keep the cable straight, do not wrap. So...which is it. Wrap or not to wrap on the turf units?
Thanks, Gary

I myself don't like to wrap the coil wire around my shafts. I have extra shafts and simply keep the coil wire on top of the shaft and hold it down with a little electrical tape in a couple of spots. Just my way...........:bouncy: HH.

I just asked Ralph of Sunray that same question last night on that forum and he said nowadays he builds them so the coils wraps around the shaft rather then through the shaft. I can't get the coils connector through the hole on the side of the shaft below the probes box and decided that around the shaft is just as good.

I have a probe on mine, and still run the cable up the inside. I milled a keyhole type slot 3" below the probe switch box, just big enough to pull the plug end through, I leave a thin drawstring attached to the coil cable so as to help with pulling the cable through. I split a piece of plastic tube, about 1" long and put this over the coil cable, where it comes through the keyhole, to stop any abrasion, and bind it with electrical tape to stop movement and any dirt getting in.:detecting:

I've been using Ralph's (Sunray) inline probes for years and the following is the way I have always done it and it works fine for me.----I "exit" the coil cable above the coil as quickly as possible--coming over the top of the lower shaft but not too close to the coil and at the same time-not too loose or not too floppy on the coil cable.--I like to be able to set the coil on the ground & "stand the detector up" (vertically) without tension on the coil cable/coil connector.----I secure this first over the shaft with a velcro tie.---Then I wrap the coil cable around the shaft & the connector is connected into the probe switch.---Lastly-I have a velcro tie that goes over the LOWER COIL section of the curled coil cable (where it goes into the probe switch box)---This keeps it snug but not causing "stress" on the coil/switch box connection.----I leave enough looseness in the cable wraps (between the top velcro tie & lower tie so that adjusting the lower rod for length (if needed) is also a snap.---What I love about this set up is that it's a breeze to quickly & easily change coils (I have all my coils already mounted on their own lower shafts).---I especially don"t want any "flopiness" off the coil cable at the coil-I want that coil cable to "get away" from the coil & up that shaft without any floppiness but at the same time without any stress on the cable/coil connection.----I guess some of this is a carry over from my gold hunting---but this is the way I do it and I have always been a "stickler" on this.----Sorry for the BOOK guys but that's the only way I knew to explain it--hope this helps somebody-----------Del

velcroed on lower and upper rods.... I am fairly tall so not enough cable to wrap around anyway... the x12 cable on mine is a bit longer so I just wrap that one time.. just make sure you dont have a loose or too much cable near the coil that will cause falsing
