Coil changes, any for F series that wont use factory hardware?

I bought the Detech SEF 12x10 Butterfly coil and it came yesterday. They advertised an open box demo coil for $35 less so after reading what they had on it I opted to buy the lesser. One point noted was that it came with no hardware but that the factory nut and bolt would work.

Attempted to mount SEF to Fisher stem, which slipped right on, but because the “ears” on the SEF are much thicker the factory hardware was too short. In fact the bolt simply fits flush to the opposite exterior side. Spoke with “product specialist” via the chat function. He/she offered to send new Fisher hardware which I said was too short, they said they had never heard of that problem before. They did ask for pictures via email so now hope and wait. Bolt needs to be about 1/4 to 3/8” longer.
Pictures attached but has this happened to anyone else with Fisher’s?????

If all else fails, you can get various size nylon nuts and bolts at home improvement stores. I replaced the bolt on a Fisher 1266 this way. Measure for length and diameter and take the Fisher nut with you to match the threads. Use the original nut when you mount the coil because it has the "knurled" griping that helps to loosen or tighten the bolt when you're in the field.

I had the same issue when I bought a Detech Ultimate coil years ago. I went to my local hardware depot and found a nylon bolt and nut that would fit. It's extra long and a tad thinner than the stock fisher bolt but it works. I wish every third party manufacturer would supply a bolt and nut of their own. I know MGC does and the Cors Shrew I just got came with mounting hardware as well.

I know I can use nylon bolts etc but to me its the fact they blatantly say factory hardware will work and then they say they’ve never heard of such a problem. I get my feet planted and I will make them take it back and look for another dealer to work with. No reason for the couple dollars it costs to supply the hardware to not supply it. Just me in my old age getting frisky!!!!! Lol

Its a fairly common issue on aftermarket coils. Sometimes if you don't use any rubber washers you can get a squeeze fit with maybe a thread engaged, but just having a single thread or two engaged on the bolt means that you WILL lose the knob. Just get used to the idea that many aftermarket coils will not allow you to use stock coil bolts.

Detech sent me an email last Friday that they will Detech bolt to fit F75 free of charge. It just seems to make sense to me that those manufacturers would just do that as SOP. I’m pretty sure if the coil is $99.99 without the hardware I would still buy it if it was $100.49 with the hardware.......

More often-than-not, I haven't been a fan of after-market search coils. I've preferred smaller-than-stock coils for the trashier places I hunt, and detector manufacturers have generally made a decent selection of coils for their own products. That said, I remember years back when I was doing a review of just about every Detech coil for Minelab's and White's MXT, and I had some issues with some supplied bolts.

In recent years I have had several NEL or CORES soils, and was pleased with all of the mounting bolts they supplied. So, in the end, it gets down to the coil manufacturer and how they view their product and think ahead to ensure a proper bolt, nut and washer are supplied for the intended detector models for certain search coils. I have a new NEL 'Super Fly' coil due in next week for a Tek. T2 and I look forward to seeing how it 'fits'.

This is my first aftermarket coil purchase. Im hoping this coil will help with the giant green beach I’m still attacking. My gripe was although I knew I was taking a bit of a chance getting the “open box slightly used” coil, it was THEIR answer to a question that stated factory hardware would work. The ear thickness on this coil are huge! The factory bolt end is flush with the opposite side so the bolt needs to be about 1/4 longer. Detech was quick to send their bolt so credit due there and I will have to wait and see how this works. Meanwhile my local plumber can supply white bolts that fit like a glove but I would have to trim to fit.

Received package from Detech today with two two nylon bolts and wing nuts. Longer one stem diameter too big to go thru factory bolt hole. Shorter bolt has correct stem diameter and works. The bolts have a standard six sided head which either a 7/16” or 11mm wrench fits. The nut is a standard wing nut style. Unable to tighten enough by hand to make coil stabilize (stay put) so small wrench now in pouch.
Just my two cents but that seems pretty chintzy compared to factory hardware. Hoping coil is much better and worth the cost.

You do have proper washers on the rod-mount end, correct? You shouldn't have to tighten it with a wrench. A coil should be 'snugged-up' finger tight so it won't flop, but not overly tightened. That can often times cause coil ears to break. With proper washers a wrench shouldn't be needed.

Washers are in place. Ears on this coil I dont think could break....... I simply cant grab the small standard bolt head and apply enough force to counter act the force I can generate with the opposite side wing nut. I suspect most couldn't hold it with just their fingertips. As tight as I could tighten it by hand the coil is at about 80% tension of what I would prefer.

Coil tightness issues have happened to me on a few third party coils as well and notably on the Detech Ultimate. Tightening the nut with a wrench is a good way to break the coil ears IMHO. What I have done is put two home made washers on the inside of the coil ears out of the tops of flexible plastic containers like a yogurt 650gr. plastic top. You cut a circle from the top the size of a coin (a nickel or quarter) and put a whole through it that's just big enough to make the bolt go in. These washers will sit against the FTP supplied detector washers and make the coil fit tightly against the lower rod. Proper tightness should be easily achieved by hand. Some coils will only require 1 washer on one side OR the other and some will require one on both sides. I am well aware that none of this hassle should be required at all but it happens unfortunately and dealing with it is not that difficult.

Just so Im clear with what I was saying...... wrench is only to hold the bolt head while I finger tighten the wingnut. Head is just thin enough I cant get ahold of it with fingertips...... I would never torque it down that much, just enough that the coil has some rigidity to it rather that constant floppy motion!!!! So far I have it under control now
