Coil choice help

Braynor

New member
Hi,
I'm new to metal detecting and I'm not sure own what coil to get.I live in upstate New York just outside of Utica, I'm going to be purchasing the XP Deus ws5. You can choose the 9" or 11" but I also saw that they have an 11"×13" but not sure if I can get that as a choice. I want to get the biggest bag for the buck so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bernie

Hi Bernie, If you tell us what type of detecting you plan to do that will help a lot in the coil recommendations.

I would say go with the 11". You can cover more ground with it at places like the beach and at parks. If you were only relic hunting in heavy iron then the 9" would probably be a better choice.

Normally I'd say the 9" but with the new 6 x 9 elliptical coil coming out the first of next year I'd say get the 11"

I only use the 9'' coil, the 11'' is a good all round size but the bigger 11"×13" would give you extra depth and ground coverage but it just does not feel right on the rod, nose heavy and not very nice to swing for great lengths of time, good for say relic/hoard hunting but as a general all round coil the 9'' and 11'' would be the better options.

Bigger is not always better in my opinion, although i do have some very big coils on other machines but they are site/use specific and swinging big 18'' coils sounds cool but they loose out on smaller everyday finds and only really good for bigger items, and also use of a harness is the norm when swinging these big coils.

I think I will go with the 11" to start seeing how I've never done this before. Do you know if the6x9 is going to be coming with new models coming after the new year? I have already out the money aside for the detector. I'm wondering if I should wait until XP comes out with the v4 and see if new hardware options will be with it. What's your thoughts on that?

We will all be able to upgrade to version 4 when it comes out, thats the beauty of the Deus you can download all the latest software updates, dont worry about the new coil, although its been mention 2016 i would still prefer either the 11'' option coil and then they have not made a specific release date i am guessing the latter part of 2016 rather than at the start of the year.

My personal opinion is you want to get use to using the Deus prior to wanting all the super duper expensive add ons,as you are new and please dont take this the wrong way having the most expensive detector or the latest machine out does not make you a better detectorist or find more straight out of the box, that only comes with experiance.A detector is just a lump of plastic with some electronic components inside it,that on it own does not find you anything, its the skill of the operator or the 10'' of space between your ears that makes it work. What i am trying to say in laymans language is that a experianced detectorist with years under his belt can use any old detector and still find decent finds because of the experiance but a newbie with a super duper Deus wont find much straight out the box, that is the bottom line on how detecting works.

I totally agree with you! I did a lot of research over the last few months and decided on the xp for many reasons, light weight and the ability of firmware updates are the main reason I choose it. As for super duper add-ons, I read that the update to the V4 will only be fully utilized with the new 6x9 coil. Seeing how I'm going to be paying around$1600 I want to make sure I'm getting the biggest bang for my buck! I know it's going to take along time to master all its features and the factory presets should give me the ability to find things and slowly master the art at my own pace without having to purchase another detector in a couple years. Thank you for your advice!

Excellant choice, that is what I use. Believe me, you will not give up much depth with the 9 inch.
Watched this Youtube the other night with this guy using the 9 inch coil set-up and digging 3 ringer's at 10-12 inches.
Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HZVB3xTygY

The 9'' coil is all i use, dont plan on buying any larger coils for the Deus,it does exactly what i want from a detector, dont even use the controller these days either.

Braynor, I am in the same situation, don't want to buy and have a new one released a short time later. Wondering if the 6x9 coil will be packaged with the Deus. A friend is lettig me use his F75 till I get my Deus.
