Coil ears breaking off

IA

Member
Has anyone had there coil ears break off. I was out today MDing and after filling a hole i went pick up the 505 and saw the 10.5DD m laying on its side. I must have pushed it over or bumped it i am guessing. Was wondering if this is rare or happens now & then........

I cracked the ones on my stock 9", but that's the only one so far (knock on wood).

The most important things are the rubber washers, and not over tightening.

I'm sorry to say but same thing happen to my 10.5 DD coil. Don't hold me to this but I think if you bought it with in the past year it should be under warranty. Call Minelab or who ever you bought it from.

Thanks, I bought it in jujy from kellyco. they only warrenty for one month but give me minelab number. I called them them and the first thing they said was "did the ears break off" and said to send it in. its already in the mail.

I don't know why??? but Minelab put the thickest ears on their smallest coil ( 6" DD ) and the thinnest ears on their 10.5" DD coils. You would have thought by now and hundreds, if not thousands of broken ears later that they would have got it right. All they have to do is use a micrometer and check the ears for themselves, heck you can see the difference in the thickness of the ears visually. A note to the wise, I've never broken an ear off any of my Minelab detector coils, but then I've always kept them on the loose side because of how rough my terrain is. Have always suspected that a slightly loose coil is easier on its ears than being set too tight.

HI, I've had them break on the stock 9" coil. I read an article i think by digger of minelab were he put blk elec tape neatly on the outside of the bottom bracket before putting the coil back on. I have done this with the 10.5" coil and so far for a year it works. It like builds up the bushing a little, oh yea, tape goes under the bushing.

I agree. I never have my coil tight on any machine. After running a 30, 50, 70 and 305 over the years I never broke an ear. I don't have the coil flop around. But loose enough it moves pretty easily. I wouldn't even call it snug. Just hit the "Sweet Spot"

Mine-lab sent me a new replacement coil yesterday (12/4/12) under warranty. They said they were aware of the problem with the ears. That was the first time in 40 years i had that problem. Thank you Mine-lab for the good service.

Few years back bought a lot of used 9 inch X-Terra coils from a guy in Los Vegas most had broken ears.My repair or fix to flip, fiberglassed over partial ears and redrilled the bolt holes seem to work well.HH Ron

Coil ears are broke on my x-terra 50 with less then 15. Hrs on it. They told me to go buy a new one from a dealer. Great service.. I bought it 2 years ago from Kellyco.

That really says more about the dealer than the product.
What were your expectations when you bought a machine whose production stopped two years before you bought yours? If it were a new machine under warranty, contacting Minelab would have been the thing to do.
Also, two years ago Kellyco wasn't Minelab service as they are now, so they might treat Minelab customers differently now than they did then.

I was quite surprised. It was the standard coil. I took it out for a hunt today and couldn't figure out why it kept falsing. I kept changing the noise counsel Chanel. 20 minutes into the hunt, the coil just fell off the shaft. About the only thing that I can think of, is when I packed in my luggage a few months ago, (I packed it still attached to the lower shaft) it must had taken some sort of knock.

broken off. We have repaired all of them. But the bad part is that such a coil was even sold. With all the ears being broken off, something should have
been done to correct the problem. I seriously doubt Minelab would have replaced all of the coils. The material gets brittle and breaks.

For what we have paid for this detector, the coils should have been made of a better quality of material. I have a GPX 4500 and it's coils are completely
different than the older coils. But they too are only splash proof from water, NOT waterproof. Go figure, one pays thousands of dollars for these detectors
and the coil isn't really water proof, only splash proof. Wow! Myself, I taped the coil cover with electrical take, so that water doesn't get between the coil and the cover and where the bolt goes through to hold the detector to the rod, I put a waterproof grease. The bolt they use is really flimsy on the 4500 and I'm sure it didn't get any better on the 4800 or 5000 detectors. So, I have to always carry and extra plastic bolt with me. I love the detector, just wish they would beef up some of the items I have talked about.

Mine broke off on my standard coil as well and all it took was one phone call to Minelab customer service and they sent me a brand new replacement without hesitation. Top notch customer service !

I just received my 10.5 DD coil yesterday. I put my like new 2 week old stock 7.5khc CC in the classifieds if anyone needs one.
