Coil question.......

D&P-OR

Well-known member
for anybody that has used the 12X13 Tornado NEL coil on the Omega (or G2).-----How is it working out for performance & increased depth over the 11" DD bi-axial stock coil?

Used mine for the first time on the GB yesterday and on the field I was on it did not produce any significantly deeper finds than the stock coil had been doing.
Much heavier ( in comparison to the stock coil ) so in this context will change the nature of the G2, GB and Omega which as you will know you can swing all day.
Ground balanced okay with no falsing whatsoever and the dig able signals came in very close to the stock coil readings.
The iron grunted out but was less alive and sparky than the stock coil.
Obviously covers a lot of ground and would be at it's best where you could sweep it across and in contact with the surface which takes some of the weight away, if it was to be held full weight for long periods it may become tiring.
Only used the once on the depth issue the jury is still out.

liketodigit-----Thanks for the evaluation of the Tornado on the gb.-----I knew it was going to be heavier than the 11" (around 4 oz. or so heavier).---That added weight is probably figured without a coil cover on it?-----I was hoping it was going to get some signifigant more depth than the 11" DD bi-axial on the Teks & Fishers.-----They give the Etracs a boost in depth.--------Del

Yes Del it came with the coil cover all ready fitted which was a pleasent suprise as I half expected it not to have one.

As you say when fitted to other machines such as the explorer the depth has increased and if for no other reason than it being a bigger coil you would think it would be the same for the detectors.

I used my T2 in the same field in the afternoon and definitely dug more targets and at depths greater than those in the morning with the GB, coincidence ???

Conditions were ideal with fine weather and moist soil it was a UK old site that had been detected on before with every machine available, finds were few and far between.
Soil conditions will know doubt be different in the US.

My T2 came up with a very nice Elizabeth 1 silver shilling from 10" to 12" with the anchor hallmark dating it to 1597 to 1600 and is a difficult machine to put down but I would have liked to see if the GB and Nel would have hit it.

The best case scenario would be to run one with the stock coil and one with the Nel side by side and check out each good digable target to see if both machines picked them up and possibly try them against the T2.
This will not be easy for me as I always hunt on club digs with a good few people around but I have a round trip of 300 miles and travel on my own so no buddy to team up with at the moment.

I will be giving the GB and Nel combo another try out over the holidays and hope to be able to give some more feedback.

The GB and the G2 which I have (G2 from Bart on here) I read aren't quite as deep as the Omega and definately not as deep as the T2 so the NEL coils may work better on those machines as well as the Etracs and Explorers and others along those lines. Just a hypothesis maybe due to their processors and high operating frequencies 19khz (Omega is 7.5 think T2 is 13 or 12khz their sensitivities push the machines higher into very sensitive chattery range) where as the G2 and GB can be run full sensitivity and still aren't chattery just smooth and could be boosted sensitivity wise more if the factory could do so before getting to that point.
