Coil repair question...

Joe G

New member
My stock coil died this morning. I'm sick.

I'd been having some intermittent problems with it. Looks like it's the connection in the coil itself since moving the wire around will get it to read. My question is, is this something that can be fixed? It's out of warranty so I'm wondering how much something like that will set me back... if it's actually worth getting it fixed vs. a new coil.

If that's the case, which coil? I do a lot of beach hunting but I also do some parks, playgrounds.

Thanks!

Joe there's a good chance that coil can be fixed. There is aprox 1/2 inch of cable below the area where the flex fitting clamps on and the short is probably above that point.

Drastic steps are required however. Inside the outer shell the actual coil which is only about 1/4 inch tall is suspended on foam pads. The outer shell will need to be removed and discarded. The cable can then be repaired and the coil potted into a new shell.

I designed a replacement coil shell for Beachcomber who had a number of stock coils fail due to salt water leaking into them. Last I heard he was considering repairing some coils for a few other people, you might contact him to see if he would be willing to attempt the repair. The lakes just opened for water hunting though so I'm not sure if he has the time right now.

The plus side of this repair is that the repaired coil will weigh considerably less than the stock coil and it will be waterproof. Stock coil weighs about 21oz, repaired coil about 14oz.

First, the coil on my Exp II went. What a bummer. Interesting that you think it may be repaired. I'm not sure what I'm doing yet... I just realized this instant that the stupid thing IS under warranty. I just got it in April. I don't know what I was thinking :)

Anyway, today was the first day the State parks are open to metal detecting and I just got started on one of 3 really big mulch playgrounds and it just died. The X-1 works. I even by-passed the X-1 switch but no dice. So, after moping around the house, I decided to take the CZ-20 to the beach and catch low tide (haven't used it since I got the EXP). I was picking up some deep old coins and continued to work that line just hoping that the surf would give up something good. AND IT DID!!!

WOO HOO! A 14K ring with 20 DIAMONDS!!! (2 are missing though) It is one honkin' heavy ring! It even fits me perfectly. I'm going to take it to the jeweler's this weekend to see if the diamonds are real and what'll cost to fix it. It was pretty beat up but I gave it a good polishing with a dremel and some jeweler's rouge:

Well, I thought that a bad day was going in the up direction but that wasn't the case... As I was walking down the beach I got a hit on what must have been a BIG piece of iron. I don't know if it fried something or what, but now MY CZ-20 DOESN'T WORK EITHER!!!! ARRGGGHHH!!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! TWO DETECTORS IN ONE DAY??? To top it off, I took off my waders and realized I have a leak. Sometimes I wonder :)
