Coil structure question.

I've got a question that pertains to the 800/1000 coils.

First, I'll mention that I have noticed that some lower rods measure 3/4" across at the coil end (the part that is inserted between the ears of the coil) while others measure 7/8". I've noticed that it doesn't take long for the rod end that measures 7/8" to start eating away at the ear of the coil, even with new washers. If the rod is not perfectly parallel with the ears, it is eating into the ears.

What I'd like to know is, are ears of the coil solid or are they comprised of an inner structure that forms the ears, with a plastic skin over it?

Thanks

The 1000 coil from my blue Excal that I cut up was solid epoxy in that area..
