coils?:ausflag:

I use it occasionally, around metal fences and metal stuff I need to get closer to than the larger coil will allow. I also use it when water hunting because it causes less drag and is easier to swing.

I only use it on my AT Gold, as that's the machine I like to relic hunt with in the woods, and the true all metal mode suites my style and the 5 x 8 gets about the same depth as the stock coil.

Have it on 90% of time just started water hunting so drag is a big issue so smaller coil is a plus also using in a trashy area works better for me for iron and trash seperation of good targets

When I was researching the AT Pro, late last year, one of the common suggestions for it was to get the 8X5 coil, and also the bottom rod piece, for quick field changes. I bought it in January and got the smaller coil plus the bottom rod. I had also read from some users that when they put on the 8X5 coil, they never went back to the 8x11 coil. I think i'm gonna be one of those people. Found my first, and second gold ring ever, with this set up. They were maybe 3-4 inches deep, rang up nice, mid 40's. Also being a short fat guy, in not great shape, it is easy to swing for long periods at a time, nicely balanced. The only con I've read about that seems like it is true, if you are trying to cover a large area the bigger coil will do so more quickly. Just my personal experiences with it. Artie

I think most of the difficulty in changing the ATP coil isn't the lower rod, but the plug.

I definitely agree with that, just don't know how to get around that issue. LOL Artie

not that i'm a great fan of the garrett connections,i've found that the more you do it,the easier it gets.however not in a dark place.

I found having the two coils, each with a lower rod already attached makes changing them onsite easier and faster. Those connectors, never seem to go in on the first try. Artie

Like blowfly said the more you do it the easier it gets. I change mine so much that it really is a lot easier now.
The reason I change so much is because one day I may be inland and the next day on the beach and I like to use the larger coil on the beach.
I do need to get a lower shaft but in the meantime I'm using Velcro strips on the shaft to secure the cable. Makes it real fast
But to the original poster, the 5 x 8 coil is awesome! It is a lot lighter and it balances out the whole set up perfectly plus like Artie said it's awesome in trashy areas!

I would say it depends on different factors, different styles of hunting, and the site itself. I use the 5x8 coil when I'm after more target seperation in moderate to heavy trashy areas at schools and parks. Those extreme trashy sites are reserved for the Sniper coil. Also here on the west coast, the ground can get pockets of heavy mineralization, the 5x8 cuts through the mineralization a wee bit better than it's larger brother. Smaller coils tend to have more sensitivity to small gold jewelry which is an important factor to me. Even though the AT Pro platform is engineered around the DD coil, there is no doubt in my mind all the coils available do an outstanding job in certain environments. Don't dismiss those concentric coils. All four coils I have for my AT Pro have produced small gold jewelry. The different coil configurations enhances the AT Pro. If I can do it, anyone can.

does anybody use the 5x8 coil on their at pro rather than their 8x11 and why?

If you ask on "kimbucktwo" you might find the answer a bit closer to home and the coils in question + concentric in use just around the street from you.
