I'M new have explorer se slimline coil
What coil do I need for coin shooting? or is this one good enough.

hello your coil ok ,but not the best, because its the same 1050 explorer coil but sensitive to bumps-not the best design. but if you dont want to spend allot money buy 1050 coil or go to pro11, but pro is 3 times more expensive and will give you just inch more in depth. so i believe you will get hear more good advice , good luck Stasys

Some of the slimlines allegedly had problems when first introduced. Ive never had a problem with mine. I bought the SEF 10 X12 and it never comes off. Most of the newer coils like the Pro and SEF and Sunrays are a big improvement and separate very well. The 8 inch coils seem to be popular and get good depth in trash and are even used in some field hunting. Ive used various brands and had a variety of coils over the years, but i just like to use these newer coils and havent found it time to buy another one... larger or smaller. I may miss a few coins in trash... but i make up for it where depth makes the difference.

That 10 X 12 is huge ! Where do you get the most use out of it? I can't see using that in any of the trashy parks up here. Old homesites maybe?

I like the sef coils and have the 8x6 and 10x12.

McDave, i have no problem working out those good tones in trash with this huge coil. I like hunting in the trash just because most people ignore it for an area they can concentrate in on without all those noise. IMO old home sites that are still standing are the absolute worst to hunt. Most of the time you have a 100 years worth of trash and roofing nails plus a lot of dirt has been moved around. The parks i hunt here in Indy have been around for years it takes a lot more time and work but pays off. Ive hunted with people using smaller coils and they arent doing any better in the trash than me. Obviously, the best location is fields, woods, and a little more open areas. No doubt a smaller coil WILL do better, but im a little more patient than most and dont care if i do the whole park in a day. I assure you our parks are as trashy as about any in the country ive hunted.

my test show that small coils is not better in trash than original or similar size-small is worst. But sorry if I just believe in this. Stasys from east Europe

I posted this on the classroom forum too...but it doesn't get as much traffic.

I will say this before going any further....The newer coils like the SEF...Sunray X-8...and pro coil do well in trash and surprise me with what they are able to sniff out. You would be amazed though at what a small coil will pick out in trash that all of the above mentioned coils can miss...sincerely.

If you plan on coinshooting in trashy sites...definitely consider adding a small coil to your arsenal.

Welcome back to the hobby...and have fun.

The slimline coil is very sensitive and some people like it.

For coinshooting I would try it for a while with the slimline...and if you feel you are making some good finds and not having to deal with too much falsing...I'd stick with it.

If however you feel you can't keep it stable...and experience too much "chirping"...you might want to consider a midsized coil like the Sunray 8"..SEF 6 x 8...or Minelab 7.5".

The larger coils like the 11" pro coil...12" Sunray coil...and 10 x 12 SEF coils do separate coins in trash pretty well for bigger coils too and would serve you well if you want to cover more ground while still being able to separate coins from trash at some sites.

It all depends what's in your budget...and also whether or not you like the performance of the slimline coil. If so...then I would leave it on and have some fun with it.
