Coiltek Joey 10x5 coil on Sov GT ? anyone ever use it

Iam looking for a smaller coil for trashy area,s something light and gets respectable depth and sensitiveity ,reading the Coiltek Joey it get,s both but i do not see much use by many people just wondering if it,s a good coil ? TY for some answers Jim

The S-5 gets 7 or 8" (so far, might get a coin deeper in the future) deep for me and of course it doesn't get any better (or smaller) for hunting trashy areas. I hear the 5 or 6" excellerator is also a good coil. I'm not a big fan of egg shaped small coils. I understand they are trying to increase the depth while still providing good seperation but that seems like a compromise to me. If I'm hunting trashy areas I want the best seperation possible, and that means the smallest coil I can get my hands on, and that means a round coil. I have heard a lot of good things about the 8x6 for the Etrac/Explorer. Guys saying they are getting dimes in good soil 10" deep. That's pretty impressive. Not sure if the S-5 would reach that deep in the same soil. For me 7 or 8" deep (so far on a silver dime...might get one deeper than that with it down the road) is rather impressive in my soil. All the non-Minelab machines I ever owned could never really break the 7.5" depth mark on a silver dime in my soil, and that's using the bigger stock coils those machines came with.

For me I found I like the Joey on the Explorers, but didnt like them much on the Sovereigns as i felt the Sun Ray S-8 or even the 8 inch coinsearch coil did better for me. In heavier trash I like the S-8 over the coinsearch and to learn the Sovereign the older 8 inch coinsearch coil, but it is not waterproof.

Thanks for the information it looks like a toss-up between the S-5 and the S-8 ill see if a few more replies come through then ill choose , proberlly the Sunray S-8 not to big or heavy and a bit more coverage . Jim:thumbup:

If you want max seperation then it's the S-5 or the Detect 5 or 6" coil. If you want to compromise a little bit on seperation and increase the depth then get the 8" coil. I know the Minelab "8 inch coil" is really I think 7 & 1/4" in diameter. My friend has one on his Excal and it's a lot smaller than what I would consider to be an 8" coil. I can see why people like it in heavy trash. Not sure if the Sunray is a true 8" coil.

Hard to beat the smaller Tornado coil with its combination of small size, excellent depth and super light weight. Physical coil size should be one of your biggest determing factors in selection because bottom line is how big of an area is this coil seeing/effecting. In a trashy area your concerns are mostly masking or just how closely located targets are effecting each other under a coils scan. The joey is a good coil from a width perspective but its still 10" long and therefore its gonna be seeing alot of stuff in a real trashy area.

Critter, just curious why have both a 10 inch coil and the 12X10?Thanks Ron

That's why I originaly bought a 15x12 because I figured the 12x10 would be too similar in size to the 10" Tornado. When I found out the 15x12 didn't get deeper than stock in my soil (it did in the sand though) I figured I'd try the 12x10. All around a better coil (depth, seperation, stability, etc) than the 10" Tornado, which is also an excellent coil. Now my 10" Tornado stays on my water rig.

I'm with Neil on this the 800 or little 7 1/14 is great on separation and has excellent depth. The S-5 doesn't have the depth or even hit hard on targets.I 've had two of these coils and was very disappointed, not a coil I would even consider.Good luck HH Ron

I guess it comes down to how deep do you want to go, and is getting that depth more important than maximum separation ability. I'm personally impressed that the S-5 gets 7 (maybe 8 ) inches on a dime. I dug a silver rosie that was 6 or 7" deep and it hit so hard that I'm sure it would still have sounded off a bit deeper. It just blows my mind that a 5.5" diameter coil can get the depth in my soil that my non-Minelab detectors were able to get in my soil using a standard size coil. If you want more depth and are willing to sacrifice a little separation then get an 8" coil. Again, for me my priorities are max separation with depth being secondary. Which is the most important factor to you? When you answer that you'll know what coil to buy.

I have read of people getting some pretty impressive depth with an 8" coil on the Sovereign and still have excellent separation..
