Coin from 1598 - 1621! :yikes:

I have been doing a bit of research on the Spanish colonial cob that I found recently on one of the islands a couple weeks ago. Thanks again to Eric in RI for the quick ID of a Maravedis cob!

It seems that this coin is a 4 Maravedis from the reign of Philip III of Spain who was on the throne from 1598 - 1621! The interesting thing about these cobs is that they were re-valued (counter-struck) under Philip IV in 1641 which is the date that can still be seen on the coin, to 6 Maravedis.

So from what I thought originally was a bashed up penny to this coin that pre-dates my oldest coin by about 100 years is quite an interesting story......and if this coin could talk what an interesting tale it could tell! I think I might have a hard time beating the date of this find anywhere in the Americas

Thanks for looking (again)!

Yes, this thing is not that far from the Columbian voyages and has just piqued my interest in Spanish cobs. I still can't believe I found it up in the hills shallower than some of the clad I was digging. I think a return expedition is in order!

What a great find Erik.I envy you on that one. Gotta be an older one around. Just gotta keep looking. Having trouble finding a wheat lately.

That's the find of a lifetime my friend. I'm sure that coin could tell some interesting tales.:clapping:
Congrats again...and keep on diggin'. Who knows what you might pop out next.

an interesting one for sure and I've learned a lot about cobs in the process - a topic I knew very little about. Thanks again for your kind words.

Best, Erik

take a detecting trip to one of the islands in hopes of finding more of these.....funny I've detected there for the past four years and this is the first cob I've found and in an unlikely non-descript area. Just thought I'd add some more color to the find since the details of the coin were not that evident on my first post. Thanks again for your kind words!
