I planted my coin garden about a week ago, and wanted it to settle before I took out the eTrac. I went out this evening and found something very odd. I placed all of my coins flat in the hole, and at a depth of 8 inches (one of the coins was a silver half so there is a large target area). I first used Auto +3, and didn't get any signals over any of my coins. I then went to manual (started at 22 then went up to 30). I still didn't get any signals. I opened the screen, and still nothing. I then checked the bottom of my coil, and my wedding ring set off a signal, so I know it was working. I checked the coil connection and it was tight.
One of two things is going on here. Someone could have came in the night and dug all my coins (I had flags on them for about a week with a coin label). I doubt this is the case as there were no new spoils. I am thinking the soil is too dense. I had some work done in this area and it was replaced with clay. The clay was moist when I created the coin garden, but the soil may be too tough/dense even for my machine. I have pulled silver out of the ground at 10-12 inches before, so I know the machine is capable of going that deep. I'm guessing my issue is the latter, the dense soil.
My advice is to plant a coin at 8 inches, and then see if you get a signal prior to planting all of your coins at 8 inches. I will have to dig em up and make them a little more shallow.
I did create a diagram thanks to advice on this forum.
