I stopped by My mother-in-laws today and spoke with her neighbor. She said I was welcome to do her yard anytime. So what the heck. After about my 10th sweep...bam. It was deep and I almost gave up on it. I wasn't sure what I had. What little I know about US coins only dates back to 1792. So I am assuming this is a state coin or a nasty joke by my mother-in-law. I couldn't find it in the red book, but they don't cover them all (so I'm told). Anyway it's dated 1749....any ideas? thanks Rich

Nice find. Did you give the lady a hug? <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> That coin would have made my day.

Hi Again Rich,
It`s a neat thing to find something that has been in the ground for 250 years, valuable or not! For a little while you walked in exactly the same path as the fellow who lost it. That`s kinda what we do -- collect history. You`re real lucky to be in an area that had colonial activity. Lots of guys search for years and never get anything that old. Researching the history of your town or area could give you hints on more places to look. Everybody finds something good sometime if they keep going, but only one guy in a million hits the big one. Most of the time that guy had a good idea of what he was looking for and who or what was on that site in the past.
I hope you hit the big one. `Neat post-keep them coming!!! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> God Bless,--Charlie in NC <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

I still can't comprehend that I found it where I did. A small yard with a 70 year old home. Nothing special about it. The town was established in the late 1600s. Your right about the history part, though for some reason in this case I picture a stumbling drunken redcoat falling on his way home. Thanks Charlie, and happy hunting to you.....
