Is there a method of raising a mintmark to make it more readable? I recall hearing about a chemical used on buffalo nickels to raise the date. I recently found a 1916 Merc and it appears to have a mintmark - I just can't make it out. Here's hoping it's a "D".

Have you tried to take a picture of it using a digital camera?
You can then blow the pic up enhancing the area of the mint mark.
Also using photo shop you can adjust the colors and sharpness to give greater resolution .
