Coin Metamorphosis (Silver Style)

When I read John's metamorphosis post at the end of 2007 I thought it was a great idea but decided it would take too long to accumulate enough dough to get some gold. I decided that every time my penny finds got to 1500 I would cash them in for US silver coins. The first time I did it I bought all 1964 coins. The next time all 1963 and so on. I am about 500 short of 1500 right now but some time in early 2010 I'll make a trip to the coin store for some 1958 coins. Here's what have so far:

I also buy gold coins when I find a good deal. Here is my last purchase which cost me about 2/3 of my 2009 clad (I sold one to a friend):

I've also bought two firearms, my trusty GTI 2500, a certified 1916D dime, and a one ounce UHR Double eagle gold coin all with my MD loot. My philosophy is to buy something that will last so I don't buy things like batteries, beer, gas, etc...... Waiting for a new Garrett and I have plenty in my account when it finally comes out. I'm going to need a new vehicle in a year or two as well so I might start socking it away with that in mind.

Other systems I've read about on this board are John's for gold coins. Les who uses his coins to finance a trip to the UK every year. I think UW has been hoarding his for 40 years or so he has written. If he puts some of his loot into the economy maybe the recession will end earlier.

What have you bought or what are you saving for?

Why don't you try some of the big coin companies like Littleton. You can get better deals and they are always running specials where you can pick up some nice coins cheap plus they have so much more stuff to chose from than the corner coin store. If the price of gold gets back up I may unload some of my rings and stuff. I've got a piece of melted gold I found some years ago that weighs about an ounce and a half and a homemade gold ring made from a melted nugget that weighs a half an ounce. Then I have some nuggets that I really don't want to part with that weigh 2-3 ounces. I have about 100 gold rings from 14 KT to 18 KT.that I've never weighed.

I buy junk silver coins at melt price. Littletons is nowhere there that price for any coin. The only time I ever buy from Littletons is one of their really good deals to get you signed up for some subscription and I cancel the second I get to order. For example. I got a complete set of circulating Sacs for a dollar a coin shipped free. You can't beat that deal. I already own almost every coin minted in the 20th century and I'm only doing it to turn those cruddy old pennies into something nicer.

100 14k - 18k rings. You're sitting on a small fortune with gold over $1100/ounce.

Yeah I usually hit most of Littletons special deals when they are practically giving stuff away. I get a catalog from them every few months or a notice for some special deal. I recently purchased some of the new SACS with the new reverse, encased in plastic for next to nothing and they threw in five or six gold plated nickels for free.. I may use one or two as prizes in one of my contests. Some time ago I got a whole slew of uncirculated Kennedy halves for $9.95 on one of their loss leader specials. I watch for all the loss leader specials from whoever and get some really good deals.

I got that half set. I needed almost all of them and they were around a dollar each if I remember. Maybe even less.

Chris

Yeah I don't remember how many there was but I've got about 13 left plus the free nickels and quarter they threw in for free. I gave some away and one or two for prizes in my contests. I think they were ten or twelve bucks or less. I know I got one bunch for $9.95. I also got some of the new silver dollars for a song.
