Coinmaster GT or Ace 400

Which of the two detectors would you feel is deeper for one, and better in trash? Going to get one as a backup and thought I would ask here first, thanks

If I was only going to limit myself to the two machines that you mention, prob the 400. Its new, has a good coil selection and the 400 does have some added features over the older ace series. The coinmaster GT has a real limited coil selection ( The NEL coils would work on the Prizem series and Cionmaster, but not the coinmaster GT). Plus the GT isn't the best machine to tackle a iron /trashy site.

But, since you mention trash and to try to keep within the price range of the machines you mention, I would look for a nice used MX5. Better machine then the two you mention, loves to tackle iron/trashy sites, does get good depth and has a great coil selection, all of the Eclipse series coils as well as some aftermarket coils such as SEF/Detech like the 8x6 and 12 x 10 or 13" Ultimate coils seem to be popular. In fact a year or so ago Whites recommended the 13" Ultimate. For a few bucks more your getting a bunch more machine.

If a guy named Hombre sees this, he can tell you all about a MX5 and his success with one.

You didn't mention what your primary machine is, but don't be surprised after using the MX5 ya grab it a little more often :)

Anyhow, just my thoughts.

What are you looking to spend? I have a CMGT with the stock coil, 4x6 and Nel Hunter if you are interested. Send me a PM.

MXT is a good machine, I have tried the T2, lots of folks like them. As a backup I would spring for a good used MX5, and one might call it a "backup" but it will run side by side with the T2. Anyhow the MX5 is just a thought, great machine for the price and what it can do.

Just check the past classifieds and there a nice one sold as a package . I have a MX5 and it's gets some negative opinions from people who take it's performance as Whites models past and that is no way to review any model from any manufactures . Truth is it's a great machine with many coil options and goes real deep plus it's weatherproof ( not waterproof ) so it can be used in very humid conditions like heavy dew and light rain ... this is a great choice ! IMHO , Woodstock

The CMGT has Auto Track and the ability to lock it if so desired.

Both have fixed ground balance so I wouldn't get either one myself.

I don't believe the Coinmaster GT is still being sold. The TreasurePro (autotrac w/trac lock) and Treasuremaster ( autotrac, no lock) models kind of took that segment for Whites.

The current Coinmaster being sold does, I believe, have only fixed ground balance, as does the Ace 400.

The Coinmaster GT's did indeed, as airscapes said, have auto trac w/lock. I don't think the Coinmaster GT is currently being sold as a 2016 model.

I do agree Dang, that some form of adjustable ground balance is a must. The more options available the better. Autotrac w/lock option, manual option, the "grab" quick reset etc.

Never thought about the M5, so far what I have read on it I like a lot, thanks. It's always best to ask on here first. A lot of valuable information on here.
Thanks again.

Everything I have read about this mx5 is that it has coin mode and Beach mode. Does it not have an all-metal mode? Or do you just hunt with no discrimination?

Search Modes
Coin and Beach modes are discrimination-based modes.
They are also known as “motion” modes in that they require the
search coil to be in constant motion for the discrimination circuitry
to operate properly. If the coil is hovered over a target the
response will cease.
All-Metal mode is a non-discrimination mode, but still
requires motion to respond because it utilizes a Self-Adjusting
Threshold (SAT) circuit that maintains a consistent threshold
level. Pinpoint mode does not use SAT and will respond even
when hovering over a target.
• Coin — This is the primary search mode for the MX5 for
most general hunting. By default AutoTrac® is enabled and
restricted to normal soil, most iron is discriminated, 8-tone
mode is selected, and threshold is on.
• Beach — Wet salt sand (and sometimes highly fertilized
ground) is mildly conductive and difficult for most metal
detectors. The Beach mode expands the ground tracking range
of the MX5 to handle wet salt sand. You may still need to use
a slower sweep rate to avoid falsing. This mode is not recommended
for normal soils and may cause some targets to track
out (disappear). Also generally not needed for dry beach sand.
This mode otherwise behaves like the Coin mode.
• All Metal — The All-Metal mode turns off the discriminator
and accepts all targets. Tone ID is disabled but VDI numbers
are still reported. All Metal mode requires that the coil be in
motion in order to respond to a target. If the coil is held steady
over a target it will get tuned out after a few seconds.

Really is a nice detector, the only complaints are the PP button, you have to learn to tap it to pinpoint, it you push and hold it, that will put you in the all medal mode. And the headphone jack placement, it would have been nice if they placed it on the rear of the battery box instead of the backside of the display housing. The other complaint was that they did not provide a Lock Track to lock the GB like on a M6 or MXT(s) However, they ( except Salt mode) only allow the machine to track from -95 up to -88 so isn't anything to worry about. LOL when it first came out, I was one of them that complained about having no Lock Trac till I realized it was only allowed to track -95 to -88..............

LOL I know ya did Hombre...sometimes I'm a slow learner, but thankfully ya popped in here. Your the MX5 expert, anything to add.......

Yup, I'll add this little tidbit of MX5 info....It is a very simple and powerful...yet very easy to learn metal detector. If there is enough interest, I might elaborate more. Click on my name and look at some of my posts on the MX5, feeling too lazy to type much tonight....LOL

Your ground is going to dictate your depth.. The GT will air test at 12, deepest coin I think I have ever pulled with it in the crapy soils in Delaware County PA is 7" Larger items like metal toy solders, and metal toy cars.. 15"
I have never had an opportunity to use the GT in sweet soil, and after getting A DFX just don't use the GT anymore. Note: the DFX does not find anything any deeper than the GT where I hunt.. too much trash and iron and clay

The GT is not sold new anymore, it was reboxed into the Treasurer, which is not very well balanced.

Airscapes ... So then you'll never find a detector that will get deeper than 7" ?? Then I feel sorry for you and everyone who swings a detector in Delaware County, PA . I've been detecting since 1982 all over the mid-west ... out west and far north and find that all coins will stop dropping or going deeper than the compaction of the soil in the area will allow and that actually can vary greatly from spot to spot , even in the same county . I scrub the surface and pulled IH cent at ten inches and a tad deeper now and then . Truthfully , if that was the deepest coin I've ever found (7 inches) using a DFX then I'd sell it and buy a BH Tracker II cause that is about there best depth ... or I'd have to ask myself if I was not using my DFX right (operator error) or it was a faulty machine . I feel that even though I never detected in your area a properly tuned and a non-faulty DFX should do better judging by the tons or reviews from coast to coast and even the east coast where you reside . And if I had to have a 1500 dollar detector to find coins deeper than 7 inches it's not worth the investment and I wouldn't have stayed in the hobby .
That being said I know my MX5 will hit soundly on a US Quarter in the ground at 10 inches (test garden) so I feel even 11 or 12 inches it will find one . IMHO , Woodstock
